Mr. Örange
I would recommend renting a mustang first. I rented one two years ago, and it was completely dissapointing. It had 300HP and it felt like the 8 was just as fast. The handling was complete crap. The fuel mileagewas pretty good though. At about 60MPH your sitting about 1500-1700 RPMS.

If they want them to sell, they better be careful with the price point. The rotary already gets a bad rap from all the issues and shortcomings the RX-8 has had. Trying to lure customers to another rotary-engined car will be hard enough...one well over 30k will be even tougher. Look at the current Z...the sales numbers are horrid. I don't think the value is there anymore for what it costs, especially since you can get over 400hp for a lot cheaper from the american muscle.

Problem is, if you want a light, affordable, RWD sports car, what else is there? After test driving one, besides the mpg, I think the RX-8 still wins out overall. The BRZ is really nice, but definitely not 28k nice for the limited and at most dealerships, you aren't getting a penny off sticker price. I think this car is easily 2-3k overpriced. I've heard some critics say the car already seems dated and design-wise, I can kind of see the '90s vibe this car gives off.
I think this segment would have a bigger market than most think if there were a few more cars like the BRZ to pick from so I certainly wish there would be more entries, but the question is who? I know Honda is too focused on being boring to make another sports car. I thought Nissan had something cooking that was going to be a notch below the Z but I don't know what happened with that. We know GM can't make a lightweight, balanced, RWD car. Doesn't look good.

And I am sorry, the 90's styling of the FRS/BRZ is dated, and I bet a lot of owners regret paying $400+ a month for it after a year or two - especially if a turbo or better NA model comes out. Not to mention the interior is complete ****.
I just don't get the hype over this car, but then again, when the RX-8 first came out, no one got the hype over it then either.

I just can't see the new rx7 being priced under 30k. that puts it in the FR-S range which we all seem to agree is not the best car. It has to be better performing than the FR-S as well. I think its gonna be 35k to 40k if it intends to live up to the RX7 legacy. And we will probably get a lot of car for that 35-40k. I do hope they make a turbo FR-S. It would be totally awesome. I can see myself getting an FR-S used in the future to strip out and make a race car. It would be nice/fun.

I also had the fever until I sat in one. Seriously, sit in one and tap the interior with your fingers. Everything rattles, especially the rear deck. The dashboard and AC controls look older than the ones in my old 1996 Galant. No joke. It really does.
My R3 is relatively rattle free (unless it's cold outside) after 3 years. I think it looks better too when you see them parked side by side. Also, I have a 2012 Flagship JVC Navigation installed, while the FRS needs an iPhone + App that is slow and unresponsive as hell to get Navigation features.
Also, I haven't driven one, but as a passenger, the FRS feels anemic as hell at highway speeds. Can't really be sure until I get a test drive.
Seriously, before you go put yourself in debt for something not any better than your current car, sit in one and think about how it will be after a few months.
I think my next car is either going to be a TT-S, 370z or STi Sedan. I haven't found a solid reason to upgrade yet.

The thing that pisses me off is that a lot of the publications and media (not all) that have been drooling over these cars are the same ones that had previously ripped the RX-8 for being overpriced, too slow, not enough torque, etc.

$35k - $40k? Only if its another n/a limp dick import coupe a la "all the ones on the market now".
If Mazda wants a segment leader, it's going to cost. My 1993 RX7 R1 was a performance leader. It was around $33k in 1993. Twenty. Years. Ago.
If another RX7 is ever anything more than press releases and forum posts, it's either gonna cost or it'll be just another sport coupe.
Just my nickel's worth... YMMV.

Oh and OP, if you like the Toyota/Subaru twins. Buy one. Unless someone's making your car payment for you their opinion really doesn't matter. The Toyobaru twins have been almost universally praised as delightful, responsive, fun to drive cars.
Besides, if you go to their forum and ask if you should ditch their car and buy an RX8 they'll tell you why the RX8 sucks too. It's called bias. It's always there. Lol
