Instead of making fewer cars in 2006, Chrysler built more than dealers wanted and simply parked them around Detroit."
I don't get it.... why exactly did they thing this was a good idea???

They did this exact same thing in 1999 with the minivans. Noone wanted the old model, but they still made a bazillion of them, and were forced to sell them at massive discount just to move them off dealer lots.

Then, when the new model came out, no one bought them because all their potential customers had just bought one of the old ones at massive discount. Plus, people were conditioned at this point to simply not buy a Chrysler until there was a large rebate. Which they eventually were forced to offer, and suffered significant financial losses.

As a result of this debacle, many workers were laid off, and the stock price took a plunge. Looks like Chrysler didn't learn their lesson....

Yeah, but to be fair, Mazda did the same thing with the RX8 in 04. They produced a too many of them, only to have the market say NO THANKS at the current pricing, and then they discounted them at insane prices, because they were officially used. I can remember lots of 04s sitting on the lots even in the summer of 2005, nearly 2 years after it was introduced. The same thing happened to the Speed 6. Who remembers 05 when everyone on here was buying the leftover 04s and bragging at getting 8-9k off msrp. I do. I was mad because I got mine in very early 04, and got it for 500 below invoice, which at the time was a good deal. This time I wised up, and when the same thing happened to the Speed 6, I jumped on it.

Mazda also overproduced the regular Mazda 6, as I remember the incentives were INSANE as well, and lots were loaded with tons of leftover 06s, begging to be unloaded. You could walk into a dealership and OWN THEIR ***, because they would do whatever it took to sell the car, meaning you'd get an insane deal. Happened to me with my Speed 6, and it was the summer of 06. I got them down to $23500 (4500 off msrp), and the car wasn't even used in the market yet. Fact is, CHrysler isn't the only one making mistakes in production. Mazda is doing it too, as are other car companies. ):
