i was up there last sept(?), and the traffic was god awful. every night we were there, there was a wreck on 95 that had traffic backed up for 1-2 hours. and not being local, i didn't know any backroads...although, one day the traffic was so bad, i actually decided to chance it, and actually got where i wanted to go, and saved a bunch of time too.

Yeah, there are times during the year that 10 million people decide to drive through or to DE for some reason. I-95 only goes through like 10 miles or so of DE, but people drive like they're insane. When outsiders comes through they don't really get it and tons of accidents happen. Glad to hear you were able to navigate the backroads -- there's really only like 7 roads total so it's not too bad.

I generally start away from 95 during rush hour. But even so it generally doesn't get bad unless there's an accident. I lived in MD in the suburbs of Baltimore and every single day I lived there I cursed everyone on the road. People seemed to take pride in the fact that there was tons of traffic. Even now I am getting agitated just thinking about it.

Oh and I forgot, another good thing about DE (that actually has something to do with this thread) is the reasonable gas prices. I saw 93 octane for $2.89 yesterday in an area that generally has higher than average prices.

Well, even in those ares there are lakes and rivers that dictate the jaggedness. In the southwest you have the Rrrrrrio Grrrande (make sure to roll your R's). In the northeast you have the Great Lakes. Every where else is ocean. The northwest is the only border without anything really going on waterwise so they just picked a particular line of latitude and went with it.

I guess I was just thinking out loud without really thinking. But after giving it some thought, I guess that the northern border is the only 'real' border. In the south (against Mexico) they should just use a dotted line or nothing at all

well, we couldn't really stay away from 95...our hotel was just off of it...near christiana mall, if you know where that is (95/58/7). i remember the first night we were there, we were going north up 95 around 8:30 to meet some friends for dinner a few miles up. they live in phili but were nice enough to drive down to meet us for dinner. anyways, 95 sb was gridlocked. i made a comment about "glad we aren't going that way". so we meet up around 9:30 (after getting lost due to the fact that DE doesn't believe in street signs) and have dinner and just sit around and talk for awhile. we leave around 12:30 and head back south, and end up sitting in an hour of traffic because while the crews were cleaning up the first accident, some ******** wasn't paying attention, and plowed into a car, forcing both of them down the side of the highway into a ditch where one of them flipped over. we heard on the news the next morning that traffic didn't get back to normal until after 4am.

it was like that each of the 4 days we were there...it was almost like 24/7 gridlock...but only in the direction we were traveling in. the other side of the highway was always moving along smoothly.

and really, what is so freaking hard about street signs

Hmm, bad traffic following you around? Were you driving around in a silver 8 by any chance?

And I dunno what you mean about the street signs. They are everywhere. Cross streets in cities are always demarcated and state roads (ones that are known by a number and not a name) always have those JNCT signs.

However there aren't a lot of twisties around these parts. This is part of my apprehension about getting an 8. I don't want to roll up next to an STi and say "let's take it to the twisties" and have him go "there aren't any".

must have just been the area we were in, but there really weren't any street signs around. we asked our waiter one night about it, and he said, "you get used to it". the only signs we saw were for major highways (like 95). for the main roads and side roads, they just weren't there. maybe the local teenagers just got drunk and bored and decided to steal them all

and i wish we were in a rx8. the rental car we got was a 05 mercury sable, and it was terrible. its v6 sounded like should have been fast, but it wasn't. it was uncomfortable. my knees were killing me from the seat position (bench), and it got worse gas mileage than my 8. made me really glad to get back to my car when we got home.

Sorry for the misinformation guys, gas did go up 20 cents here to $2.99 per gallon. But from what I was told it didn't go up everywhere else.

Seems like the thread took off anyways so I'll just change the title instead of deleting it.

Apparently so. Some people just want to read what they want to believe.
They also missed where I speculate (with good reason) that the reason gas is higher in the 'blue' states is because their taxes are also higher...

I was watching the news last night, I think it was dateline or something, and they had a story on the popularity of hybrids. They mentioned the root cause being the cost of fuel (duh), and then rattled off some reasons why it's expensive, most of which were mentioned in the other thread.

But they did mention one I hadn't heard before: refineries are scrambling to change their gas mixtures over to a certain percentage ethanol in 6 weeks, and there's only like 2 plants that are making that particular blend of gas at the moment. So, be proud that a part of your gas dollar is going towards corn farmers, lower pollution, and less dependence on fossil fuels.





*Of course by "corn farmers" I mean Archer-Daniels Midlands and their lobbyists, by "lower pollution" I actually mean higher pollution, and by "less dependence" I actually mean more, since ethanol production consumes more energy than it creates.

Oh and bonus points for environmentally friendly ethanol plants, currently switching over to coal power, because natural gas is getting too expensive, ha ha.

The mileage listed on most hybrids, including the Prius, Hybrid Accord and Hybrid Civic, is a huge lie.

Most owners reportedly are lucky if they get 75% of the fuel mileage claimed on the sticker of the Prius.

The false mileage ratings coupled with the price premium make them a 'no-go' from a purely economic perspective, and even lessen their environmental appeal.

I think it's hilarious how no one complains when it's at 2.75 - 2.85, but once it crosses 3 bucks everyone wants to raise hell.

I'l be pissed when it crosses $4 but when I figured out my monthly budget for gas I calculated it at $3.50 a gallon at 15 gallons (usually get 13-13.5 when I fill up), so I have a little room in my gas budget right now.

The news said part of the problem with the gas hike right now is that they have to start changing their gas blend to the summer version, which in some cases means they have to have the tankers come in and drain their tanks out and then clean and flush it with something before they can put in the new summer blend, and this process takes 4-6 hours to do, in some cases requiring the stations to close down during part of their usual operating hours. I'm sure that doesn't help with the prices one bit. I guess the stations have about a week left to get all converted over.

Any of you know why the united states is so buddy-buddy with the saudis? Did you know that our relationship with them helps our economy, and is also directly tied with our interest in iran? (The nuke thing gives us a great opening on stopping something else from happening there)
