Ford dismisses reports of Mazda sale

Ford has since released an official statement describing the media reports as pure speculation and added that there was nothing to announce.

With the situation that Ford is in, I'm certain that, at some brainstorming meeting somewhere, someone suggested selling Mazda in order to raise cash. I just wonder how much beyond that it has gone (although, based on some of the recent news articles, it does seem like various "feelers" have been sent out to interested parties).

I just don't know what Ford would really gain by selling their Mazda shares. Based on the numbers that I saw, Ford would only get, like, $1.33 billion from the sale. That's nothing--Ford could burn through that in a month.

Also, with all of the platform sharing going on with Mazda, I don't know why Ford would risk losing control of Mazda. What if the new owners don't want to work so closely with Ford or if they decide that Ford needs to pay them more for their efforts?

Of course, who knows what Ford management is thinking these days. They also said that they didn't want to sell Volvo because they want to fix it first. WTF? If Volvo's costing Ford $200 million a year (not sure of the exact number) plus whatever amount of additional investment is required to "fix" them, you think that it would make more sense to get rid of them now and at least get some additional revenue rather than continue to lose more money.

Update 1: Mazda too dismisses reports. Says "we'll tell you when we tell you. I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries! ... Now, go away, or I shall taunt you a second time"
