Ford to sell Mazda shares?
Thankfully it appears ford will retain some ownership so Mazda gets access to the ford parts bin, which is critically important. Its possible, if another automaker buys Mazda, Mazda gets access to their parts bin as well, which could be good.
I for one think Nissan would make a good partner if Ford is forced to sell the majority of its shares. Nissan has a sporty nature and good V6 engines which Mazda could use. In addition, Nissan has developed its own hybrid and electric vehicles which Mazda could leverage.
Thankfully, Mazda is doing great and the sales process will likely show how much brand equity Mazda has.

I think Ford needs Mazda in terms of product strategy and design. I'm not sure I can same about Mazda really needing Ford as much.
Cant see Nissan getting involved with Mazda as Neesan are already owned by the French....Renault..and not traveling very well.
Mazda does not need Ford, there so called 'production parts sharing" is overstated.
A Ford sell off would be interesting here in Australia, Mazda Australia (Jap owned) use Ford Australia for their spare parts distribution nationwide for the past 4 years.

An article on this matter states that Mazda saves about $90 Million US per year on shared R&D. If that number is right then Mazda can survive on its own.

with a divorce with Ford IMHO here in Europe there would be a lot of commercial problems.
Ford would be completely foolish to sell off all of its stake in Mazda. As some have stated especially Zoom, there is to much platform sharing going on that is a positive thing to just give up and move on. I could possibly see them selling anywhere from 5%-20% of their stake in the company or whatever percent to keep the product sharing between the two alive. That and Ford is just looking to line the coffers with a few bills not slit its own wrists. They have been making some good moves lately (sadly late as hell but atleast they are being made) and I doubt they intend to drop the ball now what with everyone saying all the American auto makers lives are on the line.

Also, cars like the 2009 Mazda 6 with the V6 use Ford engines, which are actually quite well built these days. I don't know if they'd continue sharing tooling and builds if they divorced like this, which could then stretch Mazda as they'd have to provide their own engines for these cars.

Unless Mazda buys back it's shares at the discount and is able to reissue them at a higher price.
It would be very nice if another company bought into it that was more in the same line as mazda as far as motorsports goes.
If I had to choose one then I would probably go with daimler, imagine a mazda 6 that makes noise like a CLS

The only company I would want to take over Mazda's share from Ford is BMW. Quality, one of the best (if not the best) motorsports heritage, innovations and luxury. Just "BMW" itself reminds you of "class and performance".
Toyota does have a lot of equity, but it would make no sense for them to buy up a company like Mazda. Such an acquisition will have a very high chance of the Mazda brand disappearing. I guess they can do it to eliminate a domestic competitor... But I'm not sure how much competition Toyota is facing from Mazda.

On the other hand, the mercury milan is one of their few selling cars, and its a 6.
Complain to Toyota North America? Forget it. They (and I quote) "...have no control over their dealers...". WTF. I was given that line while fighting with them, their Financial branch which covered the extended warranty, the dealer that installed my transmission incorrectly (and fried it), and the dealer that found the bad work from the first dealer.
Even a lawsuit didn't help. They just sat there pointing fingers at each other for 3 years.
Voting NO to Toyota.
Edit:
Actually, I'll go buy some Mazda shares myself. So I actually can vote.

I don't think any of those companies would consider buying Mazda. Toyota has a pretty big stake in Subaru and they are working together on a few projects. It's uncertain who would want to pick up the shares though.
