I increase my speed to avoid accidents .. Usually it's tbe blue hairs oozing into my lane. Sometimes you just can't break because of the traffic behind you, etc.. and you can't move over if you're already in the left hand lane.. so you just have to get out of the way.. Honking at them just makes it worse, because they can suddenly lose control, or have a stroke or something.

If nothing else, this will make street races FUNNY. lol

You know...lately I'm been worried about my mom...she has had a couple of run in these past 3 years and I'm getting worried about her and others on the road. She is just stressed and needs a MAJOR vacation...and some help from my dad & little sis...she just is running around TOO MUCH!!!

But...if I was an old man and someone was going to take my license away...I would be ANGRY to say the least...while understanding the potential danger. But, if we are going to do that we will have to take it from the youngsters too.

The answer is not to take it away, (i'm for that but too many people would whine) but to change the testing to be more frequent and to test for actual ability to drive/function. Maybe make people over 60 take road tests every 2 years or something.

Yeah...I would agree with that but I would take them to a road course specifically designed for situations that the elderly do not do too well in. Take them out on the road...then end it on that "OLD PEOPLE" course (gosh this sounds soo mean...lol) that test's their ablity to avoid their common problems.

So you want to construct a fake publix on a 3 lane road with a u-turn?

See if they can get across in under 30 minutes? =D

I've spent about 6 onths in Germany over the last 15 years. I'd have to say they are quite good at obeying the rules of driving except for the biggie; they usually drive too fast during non-ideal conditions.

Face it gentlemen -- this is one case where sex discrimination is called for and necessary.
don't know what you're talking about...the rate for women DUI's has rapidly increased...over here in the past 5 years i've been here...the most gruesome fatalities have been caused by female drivers either by talking on cell phones or by being intoxicated...my best friends mother was killed by a WOMAN that was not paying attention and ran straight through a red light, she was talking on her cell phone while eating!!!!!...so if you wanna get into sex discrimination why don't you start with your own kind...if you'd be smart enough to read the instruction manuals included with your cell phones you'd see how easy it is to turn HANDS FREE ON!!!...and since you all are worried about your weight and complaining about how your fat and all now because you ate all that ice cream while watching some man-bashing lifetime movie...quit stuffing your F;ing faces while driving!!!!

Amen to that. I say we need stricter tests (and more frequent testing) for all drivers over 60 or 65.

People complain about the drivers here in Orlando, but at least they're reasonably aware of what they're doing. Back home in Sarasota, you need to be watching absolutely every car on the road like a hawk because you never know what kind of amazing stunt they're going to pull. My favorite (and it never fails to happen EVERY time I go home) is where they'll wait during a huge gap in traffic only to whip a U-Turn into your lane at the last possible second and proceed to go 15 under. That one's always a hoot.

Yeah, talking on your cellphone while driving is illegal in DC, which is great. But it's not illegal in virginia. So you get people going, "i'll call you back i'm just about to cross the line."

My favorite though, is that if you see a cab driver talking on his cellphone you can call 911 and report him and he gets into a whole bunch of trouble. But the problem is, everybody uses their cellphones to report the cab drivers.

LOL!

I just want to mention that there's a woman all of you know who ran a stop sign and killed another driver and was never so much as ticketed. Her name: first lady Laura Bush.

Not in those days. She was 17.

From snopes:

In May 2000, a two-page police report pertaining to a fatal accident that had taken place near Midland, Texas, in 1963 was made public. It contained the information that 17-year-old Laura Welch had run a stop sign, causing the death of the sole occupant of the vehicle hers had struck. According to that report, the future First Lady had been driving her Chevrolet sedan on a clear night shortly after 8 p.m. on 6 November 1963 when she entered an intersection without heeding the stop sign and there collided with the Corvair sedan driven by 17-year-old Michael Douglas. Also in the car with Laura Welch was a passenger, 17-year-old Judy Dykes.

How fast Miss Welch might have been driving is open to question. That part of the police report is illegible, although two biographies of the First Lady refer to her as having been going 50 mph at the time of the collision. The speed limit on that portion of road was 55 mph. According to the police report neither driver had been drinking, but no tests were performed. No charges were filed as a result of the accident.

News accounts from 1963 reported the young man as having been thrown from his car and dying of a broken neck; he was pronounced dead on arrival at Midland Memorial Hospital. According to various biographies of Mrs. Bush, the boy's father had been travelling in a car immediately behind his son's and witnessed the whole thing.

dude..... i understand where you're coming from...but come on.. being a little hipocritical aren't we? when u were about to turn 16....what would you have done if right before...they changed the laws to 21... ? be honest in your response.. 2nd...it doesn't matter if they own it..or was given to them..they're going to race it... shoot..i engage in friendly competitions of acceleration quite frequently..lol as i'm sure you and other's on this forum do.. diff is we know when to not do it..and how much is enough. you live..you learn.. you did it.. you learned.... you made it through alive..and the majority of them will too. if they go... then call it population control. the only thing i feel bad about is the innocents. also...it's just like anything..even though you bump the age to 21... 21 will be the first time we can all drive... and not the age when we've driven for up to 5 years previously gaining vast experience.....this doesn't help ur theory that insurance would be lower.. it'd be just like we were 16..we'd all go crazy when we finally turned 21 and could drive..lol...and u know it. it's just one of those evils.. they need cars to work..go to school sometimes..and it's just gonna happen.. and when they make it through that phase... they can join the rx-8 club and post about how they made it through and how they should bump the age to 21..lol

Yeah...but how many accidents get avoided because someone increased speed? I would love to see those stats...I still think that it might still be a good system.

Here is the compromise...the system will allow short 1-2 sec burst of speed just in case...

every single close call i've been in was avoided with the gas pedal..not the brake... in fact...if i'd have used the brake in all 4 situations..in all 4 situations i'd be dead or near death...... limiting speed, etc.. sounds nice..but as it has been pointed out.. is also a safety hazard. what if your child is being chased by some psycho road rage person??? gonna make them go 35 then?? that's nice.......
