i'm still not sure. part of me says the only porsche to buy is the 911, but that cayman is tempting.
also, doesn't the Z4 M coup outperform the Cayman?
I have the money and my choice would be (will be?) Cayman S hands down.

I'm seriously thinking of getting the Cayman S within the next 3-4 years. The harder choice is vs. a 911 or Vette Z06. And, I'm still waiting to see what the new GT-R will really be like, the next Supra and the next RX-whatever.

Why do all you Cayman S fans find the car so impressive?

I like its sharp styling. It would also be a very unique bird down here (the closest Porsche dealer is over 200 miles away). When I test drove it, honestly it blew me away. To quote someone from another board, "I know why they called it the Cayman, because while I was driving it I "cayman" my pants."

I like the Cayman as a car. By itself it's a great performer, handles like nothing I've seen, and is pretty affordable by Porsche standards. I test drove one and there's just something magic about it that I can't put my finger on. By the way whoever thinks a 911 is only 10 grand more is smoking something good. If you're familiar with Porsche at all, you'd know that you pay for every single option...NOTHING I mean NOTHING is standard...not even floor mats.

I dislike the Cayman at the same time though. It's like Clarkson said...it could have been so much better. It's almost like Porsche hit a home run by accident but is holding back because the 911 is the flagship, so it's almost like they won't allow the Cayman to be what it can and should be.

But at the same time lemme ask you people this. Why do you love the 911 so much? Sure, it's one of the best feeling sports cars in the world and nothing can really touch the finesse of the car...but look. It doesn't have as much power as a top of the line Corvette, and it doesn't have the exotic looks as some of its competitors. If anything the 911 is an iconoclast's car. A car that people buy because they're fans of the brand and its heritage. Sorta like....an RX-8?

But when you forget all the fluff and you compare the Cayman to the 911, I think it's a sign of a change at Porsche. The 911 just might be overthrowned by a sports car from a totally objective perspective, makes more sense, on paper and on the road.

I love 911's myself...I especially love GT2 and GT3's, but I think the Cayman might be the future of Porsche. Oh yeah...I'd definitely choose the Cayman over the Z4 M coupe. Probably for most of the same reasons why I'd choose the Boxster/ Boxster S over any BMW roadster. I doubt BMW will be able to achieve the same feel, although it's going to be an impressive car.

In my defense I actually said $10k or more; and I based that on the Cayman starting price of $59k and the 911 Carrera at $71k. I know you have to pay for extras, but thats for all models, so yeah... I stand by my word.

we just got the new M Roadster a couple days ago. it's not really that exciting...atleast to me it isn't. still looks like a regular Z4 except a small bulge in the aluminum hood, M badge on the side fenders and rear, cross-drilled brakes, 18" wheels, the S54 motor from the E46 M3, and the signature quad-tipped exhaust. interior is still the same, just minor details in the finish and intrument cluster. i haven't got to test drive one yet, but for MSRP price of around $60k....i wouldn't get it. we'll probably mark it up to around $65-70k. i like the Z4 since it feels similar to the S2000...but i don't think the M Roadster will do very well. just like the E36 M Roadster, it's not that appealing. i'd wait and see how the M Coupe does.

i don't know **** about porsche, so my fingers point to BMW.

I'll pick the Boxster S over the Cayman S or the Z4 M. Boxster S is a convertible. BMW Z4 M is more of a grand tourer IMHO than a pure sport car.

Not why buy a Porsche, why buy a Cayman S. The Boxster S is virtually its equal in performance, you can have top down fun, and save thousands.

Good point but I still think the cayman would be better suited as weekend track car. Also, It has double the storage, better handling and looks 10 times better then the boxer. I guess it's all about what your goals are. Some want a convertable and some prefer a coupe. I hate verts personally.

I hope they create a GTS version soon!

My comment was regarding Cayman over 911. Which would you prefer if the extra $10K was not an issue?

This is more the dilemma for me vs. the Z4 M coupe. The 911 is the definitive Porsche. But the Cayman S seems to be a more pure platform and cheaper to boot. I'd want the 911 S, simply because it's a 911. But the Z06 is hard to ignore as the bang for the buck thoroughbred.

I wouldn't care if the Cayman was waaay faster around Nurenburgring then the 911......the 911 is a waaaay better looking car.

No doubt. Z06 hands down if we're talking about performance bargain.

I would never pick the caymen over a carrera. i have to agree w/clarksons review in top gear, 'why buy a car that could be so much better but is held back on purpose so it doesnt surpass the 911'

whoever posted the pics of the two cars, your not alone i cant tell the difference between them (boxster also) with out seeing the *** of it

It's "held back" to fit a niche in the market. Same reason the Rx8 didn't come with a turbo 3 rotor.

I have a cayman s on order and it rides and drives a hell of a lot better than the boxster. Definitely stiffer than the boxster and has better balance than the 911 with the mid engine. I got the cayman because i've always wanted a porsche and i love the midengine platform. If you want a performance bargain i would say the new z06 but good luck getting one. I talked to a local dealer and they said 12-18 months and they're selling for 10-15k over msrp.I got the cayman becasue its fun, looks good, and is built with quality.

I don't understand the mentality of the Cayman being 'held back'. It has already proven to beat the 911's times at Nurerburgring.......what else do you want from the Cayman? The 911 is arguably the pinnacle of auto-x racing capabilities and that's why every other car in professional auto-x racing is a 911. For the Cayman to come out and perform at that level and in some instances exceed that level........that is ******* impressive IMO. Is horsepower the issue?? If so then some of you need to read up on a thing called balance. More power does not mean more speed. It's a balancing act between many systems working together to make speed. The Cayman is a success IMO.....but I would chose a 911 because that is my favorite car of all time. I would love to have a 2004 911 Turbo Cabriolet.
