Carbon Fibre Wheels

I was just poking around NSXprime as I tend to do and found an interesting thread on carbon fibre wheels
They're really expensive, but light as hell; 8.5 lbs. Apparently they have seen them knock half a second off 0-60 times, although no mention of the weight of wheels they replaced.

Apparently you will be able too change out the spokes for a design of your choice. Should help in the looks department.

CF wheels have been around for a long time, price will always prevent them from being very popular.

I have never seen a set for cars before. I know a guy with a set for his motorcycle that weight 2 lbs or something stupid like that. Have their been CF wheels which are D.O.T approved??

you would be wrong, they have passed all necessary D.O.T tests and apparently out preformed many high performance aluminum wheels.

You are right about the idea that carbon fibre fails catastrophically when it fails.

As for F1, there is a regulation that states:
All wheels must be made from an homogeneous metallic material.
which rules out composite materials

The more I think about the ones I have seen on cars before have been CF coated, which probably just makes them heavier rather than lighter.

tru,,,,,, but rules can be changed if F1 can keep it a fair game for everyone............nice find but at $2000 a piece I don't even think an NSX is worthy enuff for these.... :D

I also think that there should be a certain amount of weight on a wheel to maintain traction.....an 8 pound wheel on a high hp car would probably spin out easier....

They seem like they would crush with all the air pressure and weight of a car.

As I mentioned before, they are DOT approved and faired better in the testing than many metallic wheels.
