3g Sunset is Going to Suck!
Hey 8Club!
In case you don't know, now you know!
Starting this year, major communication providers will be turning off their 3g services; 01/22 T-Mobile, 02/22 AT&T and 12/22 Verizon.
BMW stated that approx 1 million MY2018 and older vehicles will be affected and lies beyond their control. Basically the same for Infiniti's statement.
Good time to trade up or at the very least, get that last bit of value out of your aging vehicle.
Enjoy!

That's interesting, though that's not a concern in Canada as of now.
We actually have some lower-tier mobile providers that still use 3G. Their plans are also pretty cheap. For example, we have a provider called Public Mobile which is a subsidiary of Telus, which has mobile plans that utilizes the 3G network for more budget-friendly plans.
A lot of those functionalities are paid, so I don't see that many people getting affected by it. Oh well, one of my two cars uses 4G and my current winter daily is too old to have network functionalities of any sort.

Your Honda(?) reminds me of New Years 2000 when the world was going to end. Wasn’t that related to a 2 place holder date stamp for year? Weird how the Honda coders missed gps roll over in the code but, I suppose easy to do with so many details to account for. You’d think a group programming a navigation system would be aware gps week count.
The 5G upgrade in Canada will probably happen by the time it’s obsolete. Would be better if the existing network was expanded to cover the voids between remote communities.

turned out that it’s *all* 2004-2012 Honda vehicles, of which I own two. And it happened previously to the earlier 8 years of Hondas before too. Apparently it’s a 1024 bit overflow issue that will correct itself automatically on Aug. 1. Honda says they’re looking into it and *monitoring* the situation. Which sounds to me that they’ll just do nothing until it auto-corrects in August. The system is setup for date and time autocorrecting through the NAV system, so there are no manual menu controls for adjusting those. Pretty much SOL until August or Honda figures out and releases an update for it, if possible.

And how do updates for these cars work, anyway? A navigation DVD is super expensive and pretty much no one buys those. Those cars are also way too old for OTA updates. Is there a special program/machine that connects to the car and updates the software?

It’s any Honda with a headunit, bub. Both mine have Navi though and that’s my experience, but it’s a lot more common than you seem to think. Most Honda owners buy whatever the dealership has and is offering rather than ordering from the factory to their own spec. Just like the 2007 and 2011 models I bought, and just like all the sunroof and other heavily optioned/bloated Grand Touring Mazda RX8s out there … granted Mazda Navi seems lame in comparison, but that’s not really the point. A lot of Hondas are sold with it, the lowest and cheapest base models might be the exception.

My wife's Lincoln has a 3G modem allowing remote lock/unlock/start and monitoring of mileage, fuel level, etc. Lincoln has an upgraded 4G modem available, but upgrade cost is minimum $500 and up to $1500 depending on how bad the dealer wants to gouge you on 0.7 hours of labor. They won't sell the modem to the public and programming requires activation at the dealership so there's no way to do this on my own.

I have also driven/ridden in a couple of 8th Gen Civic DX, which was indeed the base model without A/C. I also don't think those keep track of the date. It's only the units with the navigation that keep track of the date.
I dunno the exact numbers of cars that came with navigations, but given that it's usually only paired to top (EX-L) or maybe second-to-top trims, that's why I was assuming it's not that common. Usually with cars like Civics and Accords, I think mid and low trims are the majority.
