Not. Also commonly known as a cockster. Imo they're ugly and only for balding 40some year olds. It's ten years older. If it's not an S then even more no. For a cayman or 911 then maybe.

I dont own a R3 but even if i did i wouldnt not trade it for a 99 porsche. Beside it being a very old car. The R3 is way more appealing than a boxster and it has backrow seats.

no way. my roomate had the cockster and it was slow and sorry to say ugly. the rx-8 looks so much better and funner to drive. and he had the i think 2004 porche. and it'll cost u alot to get it fixed when something goes wrong with it.

that being said, my dad bought an 03 Boxster right after i bought my FC convertible, and they are surprisingly equal cars. the Boxster is faster, and smells better, but its less reliable, and rattles more.

as for the status question, the Porsche community is unique in that they play a "i've got a better Porsche than you" game. so if you show up in a Boxster, the 911 people think you're too cheap to afford a 911, but then the 911 owners are thought to be cheap because they didn't get a turbo, etc etc. the game never ends, as there is always a better Porsche (you show up in a 917/30 and Jerry Seinfeld will show up in the 1st 911...), and thus they are all losers.

Yes, parts fail on cars. The Porsche family isn't immune, by any means.
We shouldn't throw stones, since we're comparing it to our car, that blows engines if you fart too loudly in the garage next to it.

Honestly, since its a '99 in question, the IMS isn't that big of an issue.
The '99's had other issues though, bad heads, porous engine blocks, D-chunk failures, etc. The IMS in the early years (97 to 99) had a double row bearing, which was less likely to fail. It was between '00 and '08 that they went to a single row bearing, and these tended to die any old time they felt like it, leaving you with a $13k bill to replace the engine, or a 2900 lbs paperweight of a car.

If you can't afford a newer Boxster ('09 and newer), and you can't afford a $13k engine replacement, you shouldn't consider pretty much any Porsche between '00 and '08.

+1 on the last point. If one is financially stretched to start with, any car that takes $13k engines is likely a bad idea. At least the 8 is often under warranty and rebuild prices are semi-reasonable. Still, if money or dd reliability is a big concern, a RX-8 isn't the best choice either.

That's the biggest pile of bs on the planet, and because he said it on his tv show, makes it cannon fodder for people who have never driven either car to keep spewing it out, ad naseum.

I would still buy a new Boxster or a Cayman over a base 911 any day of the week.
The driving dynamics are better on the cars with the engine mounted in front of the rear axle. Put the same hp in either one, and give all the cars the same options, and the twins perform better than the 911.

Don't compare them vs the higher end 911's, though.
Once you start putting the turbos and awd on the 911, its a different car.

Dad and i went to Rennfest last year, and it was interesting to watch the Porsches go thru turn 1 and 2, even a spec Boxster is VISIBLY superior to the 911, on turn in, and mid corner. the 911 works ok on track out, but its pretty plain to see that the engine is in the wrong place.

putting twin turbos and AWD, doesn't change anything, except that the 911 is faster on the parts of the track when its not acting like a dart thrown backwards.

after looking at 5,000 Porsche's it was so refreshing to see the Rx8 pace car

 

The performance level is about the same. The Boxster has a convertible top but only two seats. Book value is about the same, but the Boxster is 10 years older and isn't under warranty, while the RX-8 has another 2 years on the drivetrain warranty and 5 years on the engine warranty.

Don't get me wrong -- I like the Boxster and I think the 911 snobs are full of something -- but it's just not worth the extra money to me. If you want a convertible in that performance range, I suggest looking for an S2000. That's what I picked. The reason I got an RX-8 is because I need a back seat now.
