20B Eunos Cosmo for sale!
Found this while searching craigslist. Wife won’t let me buy it, because she’s a rational human being who doesn’t understand the appeal of a 28 year old right hand drive 2+2.
Thought I’d post it here in case others are interested.

Wow it's like a unicorn - I'd have to review the papers and documentation to believe it.

That's a nice specimen in pretty good condition.
TBPH, though, I really just want the engine. It deserves to be paired to something better than 4AT... I think Mazmart actually has a 20B lying around according to their website.
I actually considered one a couple of years back. Little zippy car, but I am glad I didn't get one.
Now if you get a classic Mini, that's a different story. In that case, go for one.
Someone I know actually has a classic Mini from the 70s. He showed me pictures of it and a modern MINI beside it. The modern MINI is just stupidly massive compared to the classic Mini.

From what I have seen the Mazmart units are all A or B series. The big power guys like C and D. Steve Kan told me that those cost ten grand when they come up for sale (fewer than two thousand made). Probably another ten grand to rebuild it properly, parts are equally scarce.

Never fully understood why this Cosmo /EUNOS/ Mazda was never exported, as at the time this car was a breakthrough for Mazda, a powerful Rotary 20B never before made by them and a revolutionary interior look, design and features.
Mazda at the same time had the 929 Luxury V6 4 door hardtop saloon, these cars were fantastic, but the price was the problem down under.
Competeing against the FD RX-7 at $89K (ridiculous).
Another time and another strange marketing decisions by Japan.
I think the 20B Cosmo would have sold very well in USA.
Or why not factory install the 20B in the RX-7...then...?

Well, if my S2 RX-8's factory navigation unit is potato at this point already, I can't even imagine what the Cosmo one is like.
The particular one posted seems to have GPS. It would be hilarious if it was OEM, but probably doesn't work outside of Japan.

I know Honda and VW tend to underrate, while Mazda tends to overrate. I think I read somewhere that (NC?) Miata's power was also overrated.

Do want! Wish I could justify spending 20k on a 1990 car.
I doubt people would be as hard on the RX-8 if it didn't have such a high standard set before it with the Cosmo and RX-7. Mazda even acknowledged the RX-8 was their effort to combine both cars into a single vehicle; sadly emissions standards and pricing kept forced-induction off the table (and decreased reliability to meet garbage CAFE standards).

That said, I do like the instant throttle response of NA engines.

Why do people keep comparing a luxury sub-brand flagship like the Cosmo (it was supposed to launch in the US as a premium marque of Mazda, like Lexus to Toyota), and the RX7, a sport halo car, to the RX8?
The 8 was not made to be a Porsche-fighter, it was meant as a return to the RX3-RX4 days of practical mass-market rotary-powered car. Turbos were never on the table.

I think he just meant that it combined comfort/practicality with sportiness.
From what I have read, FD RX-7 isn't the most comfortable car to sit in, while Eunos Cosmo is not exactly designed to be tossed around corners. RX-8 is more practical and more comfortable than RX-7, but it's still offered enough sportiness(manual trans, sports-tuned suspension, etc.) to be classified as a sports car, rather than a luxury car.
