Power steering failure!!!!

Hi All,

I'm experiencing the dreaded power steering failure in the morning (2006 4AT, 50,000 Km mileage) when i start the car. I have done a search in the forum and the only solution is to replace the whole steering rack but then, its not a permanent solution as the problem might come back again.

Anyone has any luck recitifying this problem? Thanks for your help.

regards,
Loone

yes

search some more and you will find the problem lies in the loom and connectors not the rack

It's not? I have this problem as well, and was told that it is steering rack issue. Haven't heard of it occurring again to those that replaced them with a new one.

because only changing the rack solves the problem. and it happens here the most. at least documented here. also it seems to occur around 40k to 50k kms

back to the same old arguement. US guys will says its the connectors problem, which doesnt work here at all, no matter how precise u solder... then will start saying we did not search the forum and dunno wat we r doing...

mlk22 has tried everything... in the end, changing the whole rack is the solution.

We have tried everything too.. solder play with connector, heat wrap, warm up, way before anyone has... Y? becos i'm on my second steering rack and the problem is back... i noe best the problem more than anyone else becos i'm approaching to change to my 3rd steering rack.

wow.. 3 racks in 3 years is quite bad. whats your mileage now?
roughly how long did each rack last?

wonder why we get it worse on the RHD cars... maybe its closer to the exhaust manifold? since the LHD cars steering rack torque sensor is on the other side.

its electric, not normal in the sense that its not hydraulic. but then many many makers are using electric now. its made by showa which builds many steering racks. maybe we should send a complaint letter to CEO of showa.

Guys, when you say the problem comes back even after replacing with a new steering rack, is it the same problem? As in it shudders only at cold engine start right? Does it occur when you are driving or...?

crap...... just when i succesfully and conveniently blocked out & forgot this potential and imminent problem, i'm reminded about it again......... Hmmmm......... Better start saving up for a new rack....... odds are in favour of it failing..........

I dont mind changing the steering rack if its a permanent solution but it will come back every 30K, 40K or 50K...then its really pointless. Moreover..its not cheap. Sigh!!! Any other optional solution in sight?

Yes, but it will progressively get worse until eventually it will even shudder during driving.

Don't drive? But seriously, IMHO, I think the steering rack failure seems to be heat related. Try to install more cooling mods and hope it helps. It may not solve the problem permanantly, but delaying the failure is also good.

Yikes. Thanks for the heads up. I always thought it was only during cold start.

strange that it does not seem to be a problem with JDM or Aussie cars - same rack ...........

someone once warned me about buying a car imported from singapore - something to do with the extreme heat frying up the wireing

Sigh!!!

I was looking for some cheaper n permanent solutions but no luck so far..... Seems like changing the whole rack is the only solution.

LTNS, anyway, Coupe07 hasn't changed 3 racks coz that would mean he is on his 4th steering rack. To answer your question, it's not a matter of IF.. it's only a matter of WHEN. So enjoy driving your 8 while you can
