my take on this:
for manual car generally ok, just that it can be dangerous to do so (you will find that there is a high chance to lose control of car while going downslope on neutral). only thing is when you engage your gear, make sure it is the right gear and put enough gas to match rpm to preserve the synchromesh.

Agreed. I think it's okay for manual cars as long as the road is straight as there is a chance of losing control around a bend. Not good for autos to change between neutral and drive while car is in motion. A friend of mine busted his auto transmission doing just that.

I was told that its also not good to have your Auto car set to Neutral while stop and waiting with the engine running.

Cos in Neutral mode, the lub oil is drawn out of the Gear Box and its running dry in it and your gear box will wear out much much faster.

I had friend's customer who drove Down the hill from Genting with an Auto Gear 1.6 car in Neutral gear.

And the car broke down half way down hill.

Guess it an acummulation of setting Neutral mode when the car is at stop with the engine running.

wa that guy's repair cost much be damn high.... sway.

as i understand, for stop and wait ok to put neutral if standing for a long while, reason why tech discourage that is to minimise gear switching. auto gearboxes are designed to last a certain no of cycle to toggle between D and N.

for going downhill hill in neutral, your first point explains why one cant do that, certain part of the gearbox has no oil pressure and to continue spinning that part of the gearbox without oil pressure can cause damage. some mech like to rev engine while in nuetral for auto cars, dont allow them to do it man...

that reminds me of korean taxi drivers, they use their auto gearstick like manual... switching deom N to D while moving, downshift etc... dont know how they can do that, maybe repair is cheap there (or hyundai parts are dirt cheap)...

auto cars would spoil the torque convertor.
