why don't you use the voice typing software on the laptop instead? Then you save all your trouble and money....
Xmatrix...do you really need the car pc if what you really want to do is just to answer urgent emails when you stop? Like a bit overkill imo.
I have tv, dvd, ipod, ps2 in the car....sometimes too scared to even touch any of them cos it is really quite fun but distracting.....then if i really need to answer any emails....my mobile phone can do that also...just pull over at the side....answer the email quickly...job done.
anyway...can see that you realllllly want the car pc installed.....dun let anyone stop you from doing so. (although all of us already say no point)...if you suceed, i am sure some of us will be very impressed, but if you failed, at least you've tried.
Quite a few bros also advised me not to put in the ps2....but i went ahead with it still...and i like it...

Actually I did thought of getting a laptop stand and fix it in my car with the power cable and USB hub attached. But then it spolits the look of the car and really makes it look like an alien with a stranded starship. Besides, the laptop doesnt have a mic and by plugging just a USB mic (and power cable) everytime I leave and enter my 8 seems so troublesome.
Bro, think you and I think similar but not on the same frequency. Although, like the rest, I also felt that a PS2 in an 8 will serve ??? purpose. But Bro, I respect you for your decision and admire your courage to install it eventually.
Yap the car pc will definitely be installed in my 8. Catcha up with you and compare the installs in our meeting ya?

It not that them are not doing their jobs. It is the work amount that is overwhealming for 2 of them. Even I have to do some work and answer the emails myself, esp the senstive ones.

Actually the suggestion to get a ultra-portable with a car jack charger is quite a good one... like what the rest say... you get the best of all the worlds plus the portability when you change cars (god forbid).
Just get the M1 mobile broadband connection modem for $38 per month... and you get wireless access anywhere there is M1 mobile signal.

Then in this case where heat is not for a concern (Did you compare the heat in the compartment vs the heat at say the cup holders?), wouldnt putting the PS3 in between the front seats be better?

Hi folks, finally gotten started on my car pc. Reason for lengthy start is because my electronics skills are rusty and is looking out for someone to do that. Well, that someone doesnt really exist here in Singapore.
Anyway, my dash piece is imported from USA and shipped by my friend. Because the circuit board is original and the seller does not have the cable to connect the power to it so I cant just plug and play.
First thing is to remove the original board and solder components by components onto a ciruit board. I gotten a diagram from a kind soul from another forum and got down to Sim Lim Tower for the purchase. Overall costs is only about $5.
After soldering and resoldering the parts (took me bloody 3 weeks - only on Sat) to get it working. So now I can tap power directly from the car battery and open up and close the screen. Only thing is the resistors burned out and I cant get the lights to turn on.
Ohs well, I'm sure I can get it working. Next of course, is to replace the original NAV screen with my imported touchscreen.

Hi folks, this week I have replaced my stock screen with a touchscreen. Yap, it requires taking both screen's housing apart and then reconnecting the touchscreen to fit into the RX-8 dash piece. Actually, it's not that bad; not that difficult to do as I imagine. Got it to work the very first time too . But took a long time to download the drivers to make sure the graphics looks good on a 7" screen. So no time to take pics.
Also I found out that the resistors that got burned could be due to high watts from the battery. So I gotten higher watts resistors. But no time to actually test them out.
Next will be to finish up putting everything together and fit in nicely together. If got time, will connect up the DC - DC convertor to test and make sure that the surge in voltage by cranking the engine doesn not fry the car pc.
