RXB Number Plates

I have read a few threads on here that suggest having the car arrive with the RXB number plate as the first registration. ( I think Goose was one of them).
I see a couple of snags here

1. It will save the dealer money cause you have already paid the registration fee when you bought the plate. Are they going to give you this money back?

2. Imagine in 2 years or so you want the new turbo RX-8!! And you want to take your RXB plate with you. You will have to fork out for a registration for your existing RX8 before you sell it or trade it in.

Seems to me you would be better having the car arrive with registration from dealer and then change it to private plate. You can always swap it back when you sell/trade the car.

It costs money to add a private plate onto an already registered car. I believe it is the same amount as the first registration fee.

So giving the certificate of entitlement for the new plate to the dealer does not save the dealer any money.

Of does the certificate of entitlement already include the fee to adding it to the car ?

If so you should get the difference refunded to you by the dealer.

Im fairly certain the initial payout (in our cases Ł250) includes the cost of putting it on the car. May be wrong and stand to be corrected. Of course i could go and look at the paperwork for the reg i have bought but I would just get annoyed that i sparked out the cash for a reg i dont need now since i have cancelled!

Mind you, i have 2 years to use it and i might buy the RX8 once residuals are known and any initial faults are ironed out.

I too stand to be corrected, but this is what my dealer tells me.

My car will already have a 53 plate assigned to it when they receive the car, and initially register it. If I chose it replace it with my private plate then the dealer will do all the necessary transfer, make and fit my plate, at no extra cost to me. (My dealer even makes their plates on site).

During this time, the car still has the original 53 plate available to it, which means if you wish to take your private plate and put it on another RX8, your previous RX8 still has a (53) plate ready. The cost you have now is reassigning that 53 plate to the car (at least you don't have to buy a plate), and of course registering your private plate to your shiny new full fat turbo/super charged RX8.

Flame suit on, AnilS.

The fee we have all paid for the RXB does include assigning it to a car. Having the RXB assigned as first reg does definately save the dealer money, i think quite a lot. I hope to get a little something back in return (accessories).

I am assuming that i will leave the registration on the car, chances are in 3 years time i will fancy a change and not get another RX8. I may have 3 kidsl, who knows. Maybe i'll be able to afford a new Ford GT 40! (i wish).

So I don't see the point in paying for a 53 reg which i'm never going to see. Plus selling the car with the private reg may make it easier/get a little more for it, a little.

AnilS, your story sounds much more plausible than mine.

After doing a little reading up, i now realise that the first registration fee is only Ł25 (until January - when it goes up to Ł38) which is much less than i thought it was.

I now agree with AnilS, i'll just have the dealer do the transfer after it's already been registered. I have my plates already made up, from GT Grafix, with the black screw caps i have just bought, i'm very pleased with the results!

I don't think the dealer will fit your made plates for you though. I think they are obliged to make them themselves.

They can do the paperwork and i'll just put them on myself, i don't mind sticking them on!

If they make up the 53 plates for me that's fine, i may need them one day, and i might as well get my moneys worth!

From the DVLA web site
Number plates must be replaced if they have been customised with:
  • Stylised letters and/or figures such as italics
  • Number plate fixing bolts that alter the appearance of the letters and/or numbers
I assume that having worked out that fixing points lie in the centre of one of the 14mm character strokes, you have bought black caps rather than have yellow ones 'alter the appearance'. That's beyond the call of duty, I think we should put your name forward to the DVLA for some sort of special award.

of course, that was what i intended, but my calculations seem to have been about 14mm out! Oh well......

It looks so good i predict i will have been asked to replace my plates within a month!
