Dilemma
As its been aired in the forum by me recently, my other (better, just in case she reads this) half isn't that keen on the 8, so I'm hoping the invite to The Heritage Motor Museum this coming Sunday will persuade her.
However, I'm faced with a dilemma. She has just told me that I'm allowed to extend my budget to £29K ! Firstly would anyone send that much on a car, and secondly, what would they buy instead ? I know similar questions have already been asked, but its a tempting thought.
Or maybe just option the 8 to the hilt ! :D

Well - If I had £29K to spend on a car ,
I would buy an RX8.
Why not buy the 8 and stick a BMW badge on it ! Problem solved - you both get what you want !
You see , the ability to think around a problem !

Thing is, and im sure everyone else would agree. Your budget you set is more a virtual budget. The reason i say that is thus.
For me there is some psycholigical barrier at the £30K mark.
I dont want to spend much more without justification.
1/. You set your sights on a car. Base price is £X but by the time you add all the options you want cost becomes more like 31K or beyond.
The figure is a ball park figure and you work around it, well thats how i see it.

What do you need from the car?
Need a boot? need to seat 4? kids (as in accomodate them, not as optional extra)?
Etc.
No use us recomending a 2nd hand BoxterS if you need to drag ikkle timmy with you.
For £29k your prolly looking at a BWM/Volvo c70 type. Neither as 'sporty' as the 8.
Can you get 2 cars?
Buy a cheap focus for £6k (economical, reliable, good commuter) and spend £23k on an Elise

Sounds sad but the Volvo C70 Convertible (2.4T) is a fantastic motor. I saw it at the motor show last year in Birmingham and it's one of the better cars on the road. - Also you don't need a flat cap to drive it.
Only problem is 12 weeks waiting list. - If the RX8 disappoints when I see it then that is the car for me. £28,000 list price, but discounts can be had if you shop around. :p

Dammit. Already own a Focus worth £6K. Just been browsing through July edition of CAR magazine and seen the road test involving; Maserati Coupe (4200GT), SL500, 911 Targa and XKR, and it got me thinking........ Second hand Maserati 3200 GT.
Oh Lord, for art thou, do not lead me into temptation .......

Rob, it has to have 4 seats and something that resembles a boot, as I have two kids under the age of 7. Mind you, I might have 2 kids under the age of 8, if the car is delayed anymore.
It doesn't have to be new, but the backup of a nice warranty is a comfort blanket.
Ruled out an M5 due its heavy clutch, SL320 due to the rear seat belts being lap variety, XKR because the back seats are too small (even compared to an SL which is meant to be a 2 seater) and BMW 840Ci because the medallion around my neck would be too "Mr T".:p

My choices would be:
4 seats: For £29k you are just about into used M3 territory, and as much as I like the RX8 and hate Beemers I could be seriously tempted by an M3.
2 seats: I know you need 4 seats but if I had £29k a used Boxster S would definately be on the shortlist.

Oilman, the holiday ideas great. Now what touring holiday can I go on to run the car in ?
Just been to see a Maserati 3200 GT, which was very nice, and the kids will fit but can I really trust it ? Don't think so.

The boot is really big for a coupe and it's quicker top end than the 8 and only slightly slower to 60 (6.7.)
I'd recommend it as a fast , good looking 4 seater car.

I had a T4 in an R plate and the handling was very very good. It had the sports suspension
Great ride. However i have to ask the question. The s/v40 came with a 2 litre high pressure turbo but no sports suspension. It was an appaling car.

I didnt like that particular car and the idiot salesman pi$$ed me off so I told them I couldnt be bothered coming back again. Maybe the T5 would be a different story, though I seem to remember reading they are fast in a straight line but suffer from torque steer and understeer.

I seem to remember that they had serious reliability issues at initial launch, which seriuosly delayed the full launch, (did they not get a lot of preorders after the Saint movie)
perhaps that knocked on to second hand values, they'd don't look too solid. (although i'm sure they must have nailed that one a while back)
also heard the handling concerns, to soft and front wheel drive?

Front wheel drive yes - so I do get a lot of torque steer in 1st and 2nd (I never floor it in those 2 gears for that reason.) Again I wonder if the handling comment is attributed to the non -sports package.
It's not the best handling front wheel drive car I've had (that goes to the Corrado VR6) but for a car of it's size it behaves in a decent manner on the twisty bits. It is much better as a motorway cruiser tbh. I just love blasting away from people who are tailgating me in a queue!
