i guess i'm going to break down and actually come to this.
but i won't be participating in any activities that i have to, you know, pay for; just running the dragon.

Your chance of getting some sort of giveaway is very likely.. usually 1 in 3 gets something.. We are also planning seminars from various vendors and such. So, Please register vs. just showing up.

no, nothing like that. i'm just not going to pay $50 to drive on a road that i drive on regularly and check out some other cars for an hour or two.
but that's just me. other people who have to drive longer than 30 minutes might want to make a bigger deal out of it than i do.

you make it sound like we should be lucky to have you, but you should be thankful to live so close and to have such a cool opportunity

huh?
even if i did pay the however much it is, i don't really have an entire weekend to dedicate to this, so what's the point? am i supposed to pay for a meal that i won't be there for, a t-shirt i won't be there to receive, and a photoshoot i can't attend?
and when did i say that i wasn't going to be social or that the rotary community should somehow be lucky to have me? lucky to have me because i live so close? that didn't even make sense. i just said that i wanted to come up and see some cars, drive a little bit, and that i wasn't interested in attending any events (which i have to work during)
i hope the fact that i'm not going to pay $37 to drive on a public road for two hours doesn't ruin anyone's time there, geez.

you didnt read my post very well.
and you can get your shirt whenever, and plan to come during the meal maybe? its not like they have an dedicated hour to give out the shirt you paid for or else youre just out of luck.. sorry you missed your chance! we gave it to a homeless kid...
I would pay the 37 to get a shirt and to help the event. period. its not about benefiting me, its about the cars and the people and my 37 dollars helps that happen

Its not about paying to get all that stuff, its to help rotary events like this live on. Its not easy getting sponsors, and places to help out. So lets try and do our share too. I would pay the 37 just for a shirt even if i wouldn't go. But that's me.

maybe next year you guys could make everyone who shows up and doesn't pay (to drive on a public road) wear a bright red t-shirt or something, so everyone knows.
when i get there, i expect to see a booth set up on the side of the overlook hassling passers-by for money for looking at the cars.

$37 is gas for two weeks. some people just have different priorities.

if refusing to pay for something that i will get absolutely nothing out of makes me look bad, then so be it.
i don't believe i ever used the word "forcing," just "hassling."
here, i'll even contribute some to our little community: i can take two people in at my house, for free. i live 30 minutes away in knoxville and i have a nice, comfy couch and plenty of floor space.
that should offset some of the cost of driving there, the cost of the event itself, AND the speeding tickets!

you dont even have to pay for a place to stay and you are still complaining about .. you just keep saying you get nothing out of it, when you are not realizing the point of what you do get out of it. And its not always something thats gonna benefit just you, selfish.
you are the most un-enthused rotary fan i know.
anyways. cant wait to see everyone there. i might be getting the big cabin across the street and will have some room for stragglers who cant find anywhere close.

I totally understand what you want to do. Not against it, it IS your money and you can do whatever you want. Just saying don't come to this thread and start saying stuff like that. They are trying to just hold a good "big" meet and yeah they need funding. Some people might not understand but just don't go around saying they are "hassling" people.
This comment was just unnecessary;
"maybe next year you guys could make everyone who shows up and doesn't pay (to drive on a public road) wear a bright red t-shirt or something, so everyone knows.

Now we are all going to have fun, so lets just leave it at that.
EDIT i also have a 4 bunk room, 1 bunk taken so far.

i think offering my house for three days to two complete strangers is quite generous.
the reason i made the distinction that i wasn't paying in the first place is so that there wouldn't be any confusion, since obvious no payment will be received. i wasn't trying to rub it in.
and the comment you just quoted needs to be taken in jest.

All I could say to you is, save your precious $37.00 so you could drive for another 2 weeks. I for sure prefer you don't show... And just so you know, Car show and such is held at a private property and I have every right to ask you to leave. Thanks to your comments, I will be in look out for your car and volunteers will ask you to leave. But I'm sure you wouldn't want to spend money to come out all the way there, so I don't have to worry...
Priorities.. LMAO!! FYI: 90+% of people coming to this event are going to spend more than $37 on gas round trip... Some driving over 2000 miles to this event.
