DRL and high beam is the same bulb, yes.
if both can come on but the DRLs don't work then the module has gone bad or the handbrake switch is bad. (assuming that it isn't a problem with alarm wiring...)

My high beams and DRLs were non functional, bulbs were good. Two relays in the DRL module were to blame.

NO.

The two relays are 1 form C.
Each relays takes the 4 amps for high beam (~4A * ~14V =~55W). One connects to power for one high beam and one connects to ground for the other. For DRL mode the relays reconfigure the high beam bulbs as series. The bulbs in series are twice the resistance so there's only 2 amps or so. ( ~14V / (~3.5 ohms *2) ) = 2A

Nik would it be possible to take pictures of your modified DRL module and post it here? It would be easier to see exactly where to solder the wires.

Hi,

ive been having this weird problem with my 04 rx8.

when i turn on my car, quite frequently only my drl on the driver side goes on but when i turn on highbeam, both lights work.

heres the weird part.

when this happens i try two things to try to get it to go on.
-i turn on and turn off my highbeams and sometimes it goes on but sometimes it turns off after a min.
-i lift my handbrake slightly and then drop it and my drl on the passenger side goes on. sometimes it stays on but sometimes it goes off.

any idea of whats happening? im thinking drl module.

Hi guys,

Highbeams x 2 work. Passenger side DRL good, driver DRL no good.

Only time i can get the driver side DRL to show any signs of life, other than highbeam, is if I take the parking brake handle and push it down rather firmly. Driver DRL will flash a bit then go off.

At present I just drive with emergency brake pulled 1 notch to keep them both out.

Can someone please diagnose and if its the DRL module, where can i find this?

Thanks,

DRL module is behind the glove box.

The DRL works by sending 6 volts to each headlight instead of the normal 12, this will damage your HID ballasts real quick.

You need some new relays in your module.

I'm trying to put together a repair DIY but I need a module or volunteer

If you can de-solder and solder you can repair it yourself.

Actually, I repaired mine about a month ago (thanks to DarkBrew). I took detailed pictures of everything. I can probably post DIY.

You definitely have to be descent at soldering / de-soldering, as you can cause damage if you aren't careful.

Awesome! (you're welcome)

Yeah, the copper traces and through-holes are delicate and easily ripped apart when removing the relays.

Let me know if I can help with the DIY

Learned that first-hand.

One of the pins wasn't fully de-soldered on one of the relays. Being in a hurry to leave, I tried to gently pry the pin out. Big mistake! The pin came out all right, along with the trace stuck to it on one end. Luckily the trace that was ripped out lead to a solder point, so I was able to solder in a thin wire to replace the trace (see below). It was bit of a pain to fix (trying to find a thin wire, and soldering it on a tiny point), but everything worked out in the end (thank god).

Darkbrew,
Thanks for your reply. Once I remove the glovebox is it the blue or black module? Other threads suggest it is the blue one.

I know very little about electronics or soldering. If I remove this module do you have a wiring diagram I could use as reference if I bring the module to a credible electrician for repairs as you suggested?

These are pricy little items. I would prefere to repair it the way you did if I can.

Suggestions?
Thanks

Take the Blue module out.
Pop the cover off the bottom.
Pull out the board (best not to handle it too much)
Take it to an electronics repair place

I modified the pic above to show where the relays go.

Here's what the relays look like ( the one on the left had its cover removed.)

And here is where to get them

Guys,

I got the DRL module out yesterday, decided to turn the power on to test what light configuration I had without it in and sure enough, now I can't roll up my windows! I havent tried to put the DRL module back in but maybe someone could shed some light on what may be going on here.
Thanks
