My dear Rube, you should speak to the english gentleman who bragged about doing 320kmh in his Ferrari F40. He was quizzed by an individual and of course he told him emphatically that he was doing 320kmh to which the undercover officer arrested him........................and he was convicted.

ya, but the differnce here is, who could resist in an f40? I mean seriously. If i was driving that car and found myself on any straight road with no cars and good visibility....well....i might not be able to control myself. lol. 2.9L twin turbo V8....lord have murcey on my soul. haha


also Al, this may be the story you are thinking of, or if not, a similar one.

The F40 was publicly proven capable of its rated top speed in 1992 through an infamous incident in which a Japanese dealership owner proved the car's potential by filming himself touching its top speed on an expressway only to be arrested after he sold a videotape to an undercover policeman.

Ok - your an idealist cjcjag and you're probably the type of person that walks around your vehicle twice before starting it, checking all the fluids, battery level, calling your Mom to let her know your about to leave home, you've probably also installed a second set of seat belts (that you always fasten) in case your originals cease to function half way through an unavoidable accident your destined to get into.....maybe your a fatalist too ?

You've taken my quote out of context ! In my example I'm selecting between condoning the actions of either someone who races in traffic or someone who races alone = the lesser of two evils is to disclude others in such a dangerous activity as "STREET RACING" - wouldn't you agree ?

I'll go on the record here and state that all traffic laws should be obeyed at all times on public roads and YES the ideal, legal place to "RACE" is on a "RACE TRACK" Lastly, let me state <again for the record> that SPEED KILLS but so does LACK OF SPEED (i.e. merging into 120 kph traffic at 80kph). There is a time and place for speed and in an ideal world you and everyone else on the planet would only ever speed on a racetrack = not reality.

Your argument justifying speeding when your alone at night is a fail, speeding is speeding and our roads are not designed to handle cars at that speed. I don't care how good of a driver you think you are or what you have done to modify your car.

Come by my street and speed there at your supposed "ghost hours" and you can be sure i will put my bat through your windshield

I don't think I'm an idealist. I don't recognize myself in any of your behavioral descriptions. I guess the only characteristic that really matters is that I am a sports car enthusiast in my 50s. I am a member of a motorsports club that conducts all forms of motorsport from autocross to rallying to formula car racing. And as soon as I discovered how much fun track days could be, I quickly lost any interest I had in racing on public roads. I only wish I had discovered how accessible tracks and legal motorsports were when I was in my 20s... back in the day when I wrote off a few cars doing crazy things on public roads. I thank my lucky stars (and I recognize it was PURE LUCK) that no one was ever injured (except me, a bit) from my stupidity.

So now, I encourage people to discover what I didn't until I was in my 40s - that no matter where you life, there is a whole world of legal, safe, affordable motorsports that is much more satisfying that any speed run down a country road or a city street. How good a driver are you? How fast is your car? How well will it hold a corner? No one, including you, will ever really know unless you are testing yourself and your car in an environment with timing gear, rules and all the other trappings of organized motorsports. A person can brag all they want about how fast they were from one set of traffic lights to another. But it doesn't mean a damn thing without a slip of paper showing the ET and speed. And there is no faster way to find out what your car and you are capable of than comparing your lap times with others.

I know that people speed. Everyone does, at some time, to some extent. But I'm not talking about whether you do 10 over or 20 over on the freeway. I was addressing my comments to the notion of RACING on the street. It's a bad idea for a thousand reasons, many of them life and death reasons. So, when I can, I try to encourage young guns to do something I wish I had done much earlier in my own life - GO TO A TRACK! You'll have more fun!

I officially retract my acerbic comment about you being an 'idealist' cjcjag. Glad you've never injured anyone ~ same here <knock on wood> and I hope it stays that way.

You've got more experience both on the street and off it than myself and I can respect that (I'm in my mid 30s). I've only dragged my 8 once at Toronto Motorsports Park, a.k.a. Cayuga raceway (<----excellent learning experience) and I've recently been trying to get on the racetrack ever since but they only offer affordable racing periodically. I consider $30 affordable for a couple of hours of track time as opposed to paying $160 for a 1/2 day which is what they currently offer.

well.. sorta. The one exception is the 400 series highways... they were originally built for speeds around 120kph. That speed was lost in translation from imperial to metric. There have been a number of reports published that state the speed limit on those highways should be increased to 120 as it would save everyone time and money, and there is little to no risk in an increase of deaths. Mind you.. I guess it wouldn't matter anyways since it's almost impossible to do the speed limit on those roads with all the bloody traffic / idiots talking on their cellphone's while driving.

As for the the number of people jumping all ove this. You'll find that pretty much all car forums are like this. None of the forums take this kind of thing lightly. In fact some forums have been known to ban members who post how fast they've gone over the speed limit etc etc.

Either way... as with most on this forum.. there's a time and place for speed.. and that's on the track. No one cares if you're going to kill yourself... but don't run the risk of killing others. Just selfish.

Doing 40 over on Markham Rd north is perhaps not the smartest thing in the world. That radar/laser trap has been there since before the Confederation.

Hell the GTA in general is just a f-cking hell hole for pleasure driving.
