people say its easy to speed in this car...i disagree. that digital speedo is like this nagging warning light to me. before, you would be doing 100 in a 70, and its only like a little bit over on the needle, but with the digital numbers in your face, you can clearly see how its a big deal how much over the limit you are going. just my take on it though. i find when i drive cars with an analog speedo now, im always speeding like crazy, and it takes me a bit to see what speed im actually going.

schnipster, you are one lucky SOB

ON PLATE options ?

Ok I cannot condone doing 105 in a 60 unless no one is around you - think Midnight Club Racing at 3-5am (the ghost hours) and your in a deserted part of town or city. If I caught anyone here on the forums NOT speeding in that environment I'd be putting 'dumbass' stickers on them

Now with that said - DON'T EVER HOP AND POP AROUND IN TRAFFIC. And if you've never ever been to the racetrack with your 8' - don't think it's going to cost an arm and a leg - come out to Cayuga (30 min from Hamilton) and for $10 you can drag all day. $130 gets you on the actual racetrack. Something tells me you've never had the "go as fast you possibly can " All out experience before and every time you attempt to go for that 'juice' you get shut down by the Police.

Food for thought.

Aside: So has anyone here researched the possibility of putting our plates so they display in the windshield somehow so we don't have them mounted over our beautiful front bodies ? Must be an alternative ? What do you guys / girls [read: Leesha] think ?

talk about beating a dead horse. this topic has been brought up a number of times. someone even posted the actual law. basically the law says the plate needs to be affixed to the front of the vehicle with no obstructions and the plate cannot be modified or cut. like most laws under the highway traffic act, the "obstruction" comes down to the officers discression. So whether or not a windshield is an obstruction depends on the officers mood.

now that being said, i drove around for 4 months with my plate on my dash and never once got hastled. Also, there are people that cut their plates, or put those see through plate covers on them. technically those options are both illegal as well. plain and simple, the stock location for your liscence plate (that comes on a CANADIAN car) is the only sure fire way to not catch heat for it. If you like to tempt fate and try something different, dont bitch and moan when you get caught. however, when you have a story like schnipsters, do share, its fun for everyone. lol

I decided to put mine back on the front for the USA cruise we went on, just to make things go as smoothly as possible and i havent yet put it back in my windsheild. Yes, the car looks so much cleaner without, but its a 110 dollar ticket that i cant really justify right now. The way i see it, the no front plate thing can be used as a reason to pull you over, or a way to increase any fines you might have coming to you if the officer is having a bad day, or you were being mouthy to them.

I went a whole year and 1/2 before finally getting a ticket. He also warned me about the cover on the plate which is clear... I have yet to remove that...

Everytime I went over the border they commented on my plate being on the dash thinking the car wasn't mine and even asked to see the ownership once... They also mentioned that they have to ask because it could be stolen... Anyways...I now have it on attached to my grill...

that makes me a saaaaaad panda

seriously, its not as big a deal on the stock bumper as it is on the speed bumper. there are compromises though.

Great story op...lucky SOB! lol. That's why I love the track, you really don't feel the need as much on the street to speed.

Not making any comments about the plates since it has been talked to death in other threads.

I would LOVE to take my 8 onto a track, but aren't they expensive for the most part?

on another note, I actually find that I don't speed as much when I'm driving the 8, as opposed to my hybrid camry from before. With the digital speedometer, it's impossible to notice that you're over the speed limit, and it doesn't help either that our cars stick out like a sore thumb (but sticking out in a good way). So many more cops would try to tag vehicles like ours that look sporty; atleast that's what I think

Speeding is for the track, look at me got pulled last year for street racing and that was for doing 70 in a 70.

Sigh, thus now I just keep the 8 bone stock.

This an old conversation now. We all know what the mandate for the police, is to write tickets to modified cars. I dont like it any more than you guys do as I own or drive 2 modified cars, one of them heavily modified.(6 point cage, sub frames, gears, etc). What I do know is that Im not dumb enough to do things that will make it obvious and then they have to pull me over, like no front plate, changing the color of lights/signal markers etc. In time this will all blow over and they will have a new and better cause to fight. Until then I MAKE SURE my cars can pass a road side MOT safety, from a clean air test to tires having tread and clearing fenders etc. Everyone can brag about how they always beat tickets etc, but the day will come in court when your record is brought up and the **** will hit the fan.

And yes Reuben I think your as dumbass for 105 in a 60, 5 more km and you wouldnt have your car right now, and running with no front plate well ..................DUMBASS

In my defense I didn't know that kind of off set was illegal. Never ever heard of that before. Not saying that would hold up in court, just saying

Wow you are pretty lucky man! And everyone who posted here saying that you haven't learned your lessons are hypocrites. They go over the speed limit all the time

But then again, they don't get caught...

Bingo.

I just had my FD painted. I asked the body shop to keep the front plate mount off the car. I will run without it as it destroys the body lines.

But that said I rarely speed or give other reasons to be pulled over and I will rarely drive the car.

In the good old days the police would give you an opportunity to show up at the cop shop within a certain time frame to fix little issues.(blown headlight, show insurance card etc.)

Now despite that not being the practice anymore you can still try the same thing with the prosecutor at court. I have watched them withdraw many charges when people show up with proof of rectifying the issue.(depends on their mood though)

I was at a car show recently and noticed a heavily modded challenger with a fake plate on the front.

From a distance it appeared to be beautifully flushed into the bumper to not allow the break up of any body lines. Upon closer examination it was a vinyl decal that replicated the plate number.(but without the Crown, and the Provincial Message)

I am considering this option but the obvious downside is that you can no longer plead ignorance with an officer that takes issue with it. But that said you really had to come close to know it was fake. From a distance an officer would be able to see the number and run the plate if so desired. The vehicle will then check out hopefully requiring no further intervention from said officer.

But for a daily driver I think I would always run a proper front plate.

I just hope that just because you were lucky enough to get off the hook despite speeding and no front plate, others don't get encouraged to do the same. There are enough morons on the street that don't know how to drive and apparently, there is a reputation that rx8 drivers are d!cks. So, let's try to change that image as opposed to proving them right!

I am guilty to speeding - yes. But not more than 10-20 over...

As for the front plates topic, to each their own.

The only piece of asphalt you can be sure is "deserted" is a track. Street racing, whether with other cars or solo, makes about as much sense as car surfing (even less because surfers only kill themselves). If you drive long enough, you will have an accident. If you street race often enough, you will have an even bigger accident. It's just a matter of statistical probability. Inevitably, something will go wrong (a dog runs out on the street, a taxi zips through an interesection in front of you, you pick up a nail and have a blowout) and in an instant lives are ruined... or worse.

Indulge your need for speed at a track. God knows there are enough around. And leave the streets (no matter how deserted you THINK they are) to people who just want to get to where they are going and who want to arrive alive.

I know when im speeding without even have to look down at the speedometer, at 105 in a 60 zone your basically passing every car and you cannot realize that maybe your going a lil fast? I have no sympathy for people that use our public roads to drive at excessive speeds
