Preparing for Winter in Toronto

Hey guys,
This winter will be the first for my RX8, I know winter tires are a must, but what else do you guys do to prevent our cars from driving sideways on the snow covered roads or being stuck going up hills?

Last winter I was in my friends rx8 and we were driving along bayview going south and its a gentle upward slope leading to Cummer, we couldn't even make it up, had to Uturn (which was also near impossible), and take a detour.

I heard some people put extra weight in their trunk liek a bag of sand or something?
So what do you guys do? (FYI not driving the car in the winter is not an option lol)

Thanks!

Yeah, I have somewhat similar Hankook Icebear W300 Winters. From what I have read, they should be pretty good as well.

I've driven an Alero with/without winters, a Cobalt SS with/without winters, and a Camaro with winters.

Winter tires make all the difference. As car magazines state a FWD with winters is better then an AWD without.

Yeah I read up on those tires on canadian driver site and they are really good.

But I'm probably gonna go with the Gislaved Nord Frost 3 tires just cuz I'm getting a group buy discount on them.

Lets all hope for global warming so we wont have to deal with the snow =)

Gislaved's are pretty good. Had 14s on my Miata, never got stuck on hills, etc. Even went snowplowing on the 401 after that one big storm we had last year.

RFD is evil... so I stopped visiting the deals forum, lol.

Wtf?!

Apparently a noreaster will blow in tomorrow evening and dump 15 cm in Ottawa. Just great. I can go to work but not come back... (my snow tires are at my other house in London, I wasn't going to swap them until the weekend)

It's all down to the tires. I have crap winter tires (Pirelli Snowsport 240) and yes, these will get you stuck on Bayview or Don Mills during a storm.

sorry to hear that

and yeah, it is all down to the tires. dont get sucked in by the high speed ratings of these tires. michelin has some like that too... they feel like hockey pucks and may as well be. feel great on cold dry pavement, but as soon as there is any sort of moisture on there, any ice, any snow. you may as well be on an all season. who cars if your snow tires are only Q or S rated. Q rated is the lowest speed rating tire you can get, and even they are rated for 160Km/h. I dont imagine thats a problem for anyone as going those speeds in the winter is a potential death sentance, not to mention anywhere on public roads around here you will be hit with the "street racing" law. when it comes to winter tires, dont worry about steering response being lost through the soft tires. your just trying to get through the winter without incident anyways.

haha if you don't got good tires, STAY AWAY from donmills between sheppard and yorkmills, that bridge over the 401 is suicide. It's comparable to the hills in San Fran.
