While on my way up to visit my parents in Ottawa last weekend for my moms 50th birthday, I decided to take highway 7 instead of the usual 401/416 route I normally take. On the outskirts of Havelock I was in the back of a 5-6 car line going about 70 when someone in front slams on their brakes. Everybody in front of my does the same (as do I) and we all come to a stop with me about a good foot to 18 inches from the guy in front of me. While leaning forward to check if my coffee had spilled forward onto my radio, I look in front of me and see the guy in a Mazda 3 in front of me turn around to face me and flip me the bird, so I gave him the "whats your problem" hand motion and thought nothing of it.

When the line starts moving again in an 80 zone, this guy starts brake checking me and going from 30km/h to 90 km/h and back to 30 km/h multiple times, so I pass him in the next passing zone and get on with my life. About 2 minutes down the road, I spot a cop off in the weeds, so I drop back to dead on the speed limit (I was going about 87 in an 80) figuring that he is just there gunning the weekend cottage country traffic as they generally do. To my instant dismay, he pulls out behind me and follows me for about a minute before he turns on his lights and pulls me over.

I thought I was going to get a talking to for the HID's in my Sentra (They are aimed pretty low, but people still flash me all the time like they a high beams) or maybe get a ticket for speeding, both of which I suppose I deserve and was willing to take the punishment. He comes up to the window, asks me for my license/registration/proof of insurance, looks around the inside of my car with his flashlight, then goes back to his car to run the info. At this point I am expecting a $100 ticket for speeding or a fix-it ticket for the lights, but he comes back to the car and tells me that he got a call from a distraught gentleman who said I was swerving in and out of traffic and having road rage back on the outskirts of Havelock. I proceed to explain what had happened with the guy who had flipped me off and the cop tells me to sit tight because the guy who called it in was coming to the scene.

After about 5 minutes of nervously sitting there contemplating how bad a ticket would be for supposed road rage would affect my insurance/wallet, the same 3 pulls over and hard brakes in the gravel, nearly rear ending me. The guy (mid-40's and 250-300lbs ish) jumps out of his car and comes up to my car just-a-screamin' at me for tailgating him and passing him, blah blah blah blah. The cop gets out of his car and leads the guy back to his car and has a talk with him and from the hand gestures I can see, it was the wildest account of what happened in his broken little mind.

After the cop runs the guys info, he comes up to my window and says "This gentleman's story is drastically different from what you told me, are you sure you aren't lying to me?". I explained my side again, word for word what I had said before and the cop walks over to talk to the guy again. When the cop comes back he is holding his ticket book and I was fuming, ready to argue (read: be a pain in the ***) the ticket, but when he leans down to talk to me he says "This guy wants me to give you the biggest ticket I can, but his story changed when I asked him again, I am going to let him leave and make it look like I am giving you a ticket, sit tight". The guy in the 3 pulls away, gives me a **** eating grin as he slowly passes, and is gone. The cop comes over to me and gives me a quick talk about safe following distance and wishes me a good weekend.

Now that I am thinking about it after the fact, I wish I would have to the police officers name/township he is stationed in so I could call his supervisor and give him a good word about the experience (not that that would really change anything). I was both shocked and amazed that my word, as a 22 year old, actually held some weight against a surly 40-something year old guy.

Wow.....what an *** hat.

This is why I don't mess around in traffic. If per say, I'm coming up on someone to go by and they speed up because god knows why, maybe they can't let the fast looking car pass or whatever, I will gun it and blow by while they back off. My experience has it the longer I stay in cruise mode behind someone waiting patiently for them to move or slightly accelerate to go on by, the more they will just act retarded so I don't give them the chance if they show the initiation to try it. I whip in and out (like a virgin on his wedding night) of traffic at my speed and gun it when I need to in order to minimize people's tendency to act like *** hats.

This incident reminded me of my first accident where a 40 yr old guy chased after me cause he felt I cut him off.....then he cut in front of my car and slammed on his brakes cause me to swift and hit his car. The guy immediately called the cops and told me that he is going to screw my driving record up! I was lucky that there was a witness at the scene and the cop was understanding of the situtation.....

Its ppl like this which have Road Rage that should be booked for unneseccary usage of a cop's time...Son-of-B#%$!.....

I had a dude in a pickup cut me off as i was right beside him, instead of slamming on the brakes I followed him over and continued my pass on the shoulder.
He obviously took it wrong, went nuts and passed me and a bunch of other traffic on an exit ramp, back across 3 lanes of traffic in front of me again and slammed on his brakes(while at like 140/km/hr)
so i pull up beside him with the WTF face and hes just glaring at me, shortly after he pulls a u turn on the 417, obviously regaining his senses before I got his plate number......

I think what really got me about it was that he called the cops... I have had people flip me off, brake check me, cut me off, not let me finish changing lanes, tailgate, etc etc etc (While in the states I even had a guy throw something at my car...), but I can honestly say, I wouldn't have thought to call the cops, and if I did, I would have expected them to do nothing.

I am just happy I got a cop who would listen to me, I have been in the car with people when they were pulled over for something similar to this and they had done nothing wrong/illegal and still got a hefty ticket and a handful of points...

There will always be people like this on the road. They feel it's their duty to "police" the roads when there are no police in sight.
I can't tell you how many times I've seen the long *** conga lines forming behind this dick who will not let anyone pass or be polite and pull over so the rest of traffic can go by.
It's always those people in economy sedans too. Followed by the big *** SUV's. So of course, when the SUV tries to pass, the little economy car speeds up, and back into conga line formation.

I try to avoid one lane roads as much as possible because this irritates me like there's no tomorrow. Common courtesy is all people need. Is that too much to ask? If you know you're not going to go faster than the speed limit, ****, move over!! Let the rest of the people through!!

The only time they ever let people pass is if they know their car is "inferior" in power. It happened all the time. I drive the same whether it's in my FD or the Mazda3 (when I had it). But if people see you in a sedan that they think is "inferior" in power, they won't let you through.
In the FD, its a completely different story. They glimpse in the rear view mirror, and before I can even get within 3 car lengths of the car, they're already moving over or pulling over to the side.

I only lived in the US for 3 years, but I certainly miss PA for their rules (on multi-lane roads at least), stay to the right unless you're passing, otherwise, enjoy the ticket for being an asshat.

Being (for now...) in one of those highly inferior cars, I let most anyone who wants to pass, pass. By no means do I hold people up by doing the speed limit, but if someone wants by me and there is no good passing spot, I'll pull over or get as far over as I can.

Maybe this is just a sign that I need to ditch the beater and buy my 8? hahaha

It is good to see some nice cops out there. I like how he took his time to assess the situation before taking action.

I really have to watch my driving and speed behaviour. My car is pretty noticable and my employer is on the back end of it.

Why didn't the fat guy get a ticket for slowing down to 30km/h repeatedly or at least threatened with it? Why did the cop feel the need to placate the fat guy? It's one person's word against another, there shouldn't be any charges against anyone unless there is some kind of evidence. Evidently the cop was hoping you would admit what you'd done, because otherwise he had nothing.
