Accuracy of gas gauge?

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but I noticed my gas gauge is a little bit erratic. Sometime I would look and I would have a bit more the 3/4 of gas in the tank. I would drive for about 10 kms at normal speeds and the next thing I know, it drops down close to a half a tank. When I take the car out again, it shows that I have more gas than before. Is it just my car or is this "normal"?

inclines and declines of the road can affect gas gauge readings. The 'most accurate' reading is when stationary and sitting on level surface.

Mine REALLY drops like a boatanchor the last 1/4 tank. Usually get about 30-40km out of the last 1/4 before the light comes on. I think it drops slower if I make the BEEP happen more often during that last 1/4....that could be my imagination...:D

Pump.....

The cause is mostly the pump. We have a gas tank that is saddle shaped, and sits over the driveline. There is no hose joining the bottom halves together, but the pump is supposed to circulate thru both sides.

Sometimes there is more gas on the passenger side, or the level can get high on the drivers side, where the gauge float is, hence a higher reading.

Better learn to live with it! :D

Mine's erratic too. At the begining it drops like biatch ... but the second half it barely drops (even goes up!). I've learned that I shouldn't really care until the yellow light comes on.

Mine's been a hell of a lot better than my VW Golf's gas gauge I seem to get around 100KM per quarter tank.

I think the closest I ever came to empty was having 2.3 L left!! That too was an extra 70-80km. I was on the highway and coming into Calgary.

i've ran out of gas once already... but that was on the very first tank of gas on the car... but now i know it better so it doesnt happen much anymore... and yes the guage is pretty messed up it seems like it drops slower when u actually push the car its really strange the way it acts..

On my last long trip, the best that I have seen on my gauge is about 110-112KM per 1/4. I have not noticed much problem with the gauge moving up and down... accruacy seems pretty good to me.. I did find that when you push it hard it like the fuel...I guess its no different than any other performance car

I actually enjoy the relative pathetic mileage...Gives me more time and excuses to show her off at gas stations! I would not drive this car any other way. If that was the case I should have bought a PRIUS ....eeeewwww

I am with NS_RX... About a week ago I was almost ready to post how excellent this gas gauge was... I find it very linear, and pretty accurate.

My Honda gives me 400 KM for the first "half" tank, and 250 KM for the last half. I find that 9 times out of 10, I get 25-30 KM per 1/16th of a tank on the RX-8, it is THAT linear. Wierd.
