Zip oil consumption - something to worry about?

I guess oil consumption in our RX-8 has always been on the low side, perhaps something to do with the fact that we're fairly careful drivers - mashing the pedal isn't our thing. The car has a bit over 22,000km on the odometer now, and had the "G" flash at the 20,000km service. I hadn't checked the oil level for over a 1000km, and found that the oil level hadn't moved off the "full" mark on the dipstick. Should I be concerned? The car is running like a bird, no sign of overheating.

I have over 10,000 miles on mine, and I have added less than 1 quart during that time, maybe only 1/2 qt. at most. I have however, changed the oil at 500, 5000, and 10,000 miles.

Drive harder and look harder labrat

I guess it is good in one sense, but just keep checking. You must have a few oil change sometimes i suppose they overfilled so you don't get a drop ever between change??

I will tell them not to overfilled with engine oil so I can have a look at consumption

I hope this is what happened and your car is fine :D

Apparently the car uses more oil during the first 15000 km to help the seals bed in. After that the computer automatically reduces the amount of oil injected into the combustion chambers.

However you should sitll be using oil so this is a bit unusual???

Without knowing for sure, I would like to suggest that the amount of oil injected is related to how much "spirit" the driver is coaxing out of the Renesis, if you know what I mean.

Cheers,
Hymee.

I did put in ~100mL of oil 1000km after the 20,000km service, but nothing since then. There is still a light burnt oil deposit on the bottom of the exhaust tips. I'm always careful to "initialize" the electronics before firing up the motor.

I've certainly heard that driving style can have an impact on oil consumption, as can the number of engine starts and the traffic conditions. I guess I'm lucky that my run to work is about 25km in light traffic.

I think if you added 100ml after 1000k then that is very normal.

I guess you may also have some minor variations each time you check due to physical conditions such as engine temps and human error.

Contrast my experience with the ongoing review in Autoweek (see the Media section), where they don't leave home without a quart bottle of oil.

I've had to add just 1 litre every 5000km. Have done 18000km I check every Friday night before people have a go at me.(That's when I get the car back off of the wife!)

Hard driving uses more oil, there's no question. If you consistently potter round 2000~3500rpm, you'd probably use almost none between services.
