Windscreen Problem
had my baby now three weeks, if i had purchased before marriage i might have reconsidered the later
anyone have any ideas on repairing fine surface scratches on windscreen, i was quoted $900 for new though they are working on an aftermarket which will cost $300 when available
fine scratches not noticable by some but then aren't we all a little fussy about this car...
the cause.....kids wiping screen with cloth that had dust particles

hi, the window tint guys maybe able to "polish" the fine scratches out on the windows/windscreen. look up yellow pages in your area and make few phone calls. it beats spending $900 on a new one.
good luck and let us know

Hymee is not planning a stone guard grill for windscreens
But I'm sure you could get some from the older guys who have driven with there caravan round australia, and even get some of those really wide mirrors!
Hehehe.
You could try Novus windscreen repair as well.

Cheers,

Hi,
There's an interesting article on Autoweb about the glass repair process used by Windscreens O'Brien to fix chips and cracks. Not quite what you want here, but may be useful for someone to know at some stage.
http://www.autoweb.com.au/cms/A_6073/article.html
However, it seems that the damage needs to be more than just a scratch.
When I got my first RX8 windscreen chip I went to W O'B to see if they could restore my injured baby.... The helpful guy there told me that such a small chip was in no danger of spreading to a crack, and that it wasn't worth fixing. He said that he could cheerfully take my $70 or $80 and put some resin in, but as it was well out of my line of sight there wasn't much point (and the repair would not probably be completely invisible anyway). So I left it and forgot about it.
In general though, I imagine that minor scratches can be polished out of glass. If the windscreen shops don't do it, then if you know any jewellers they might be able to tell you if it's possible as they have quite a range of techniques for different grades of fine polishing and restoration of different surfaces. Of course 'possible' might not be the same as 'practical' or 'affordable' in this case.
Good luck.

thanks for all the info..
i have found that there IS an aftermarket windscreen which can be fitted for $240 contrary to mazda's response "its in development"
though i wont be going to that expense.. rather novus will polish out fine scratches ...if you speak to the right people willing to assist

Good to hear that you found someone who'd do the job.
Coincidentally, I stopped to look at a black RX8 yesterday that was parked in front of a windscreen repair shop. So I went in and asked about scratches. The guy told me that they had two approaches:
a) Fine scratches - polish out with jeweller's rouge, using what he called a mop, on an electric polishing tool.
b) Deeper scratches - replace screen under insurance. This sounds slightly on the dodgy side of the line, but apparently there are laws covering cracks, scratches, chips etc in the driver's line of sight, so I guess it's common practice to be generous in their interpretation......

update: novus said they would not do it as it would create a magnifying glassproblem.... so did about three other workshops until...
i contacted knights windscreen repairs (melbourne area only) .these guys just do repairs and not replacements and hence they try to fix anything..
noel, the owner of the business came (in his mx5 - he likes mazdas) and fixed the windscreen scratches without issue or problem at all in half an hour ...windscreen is like new!!
if you have this problem.. call knights ...i was happy with his service...and am not getting commission!!
