Tyre poll

Although there are a zillion threads on tyres, there are no polls on what is the best tyre for our RX-8.

As there are so many variables and personal opinions on what is the best tyre option, I thought I'd put this one together to gather your collective thoughts on this question...

What is the best money for value tyre for normal city/country driving?

Will you be including a poll?

There are lots of tire reviews on this site and on tirerack.com you could search through.

He is a Queenslander but I think this still qualifies as an Aussie... haha.

Does Yoko AD07 available in Australia. I vote for it even if it is $600 a corner!~ Nothing on the list even come CLOSE on grip.

There are a multitude of tyres out there and whilst one may have a personal preference for a particular tyre, it may not to the liking of another.

I have to confess its more for public interest than anything else, I've searched everywhere and theres no history on anything like this being done before.

I went for the most trusted and popular brands and it will be interesting to see the results....

My RE050A pole position isn't on the list. Can you get them in Aus?

Yes but how do they peform/feel in comparison to any other tyres you have had on the 8?

On 18" rims I have had Potenza's, Rosso Asymetrico's, RT615's and Toyo R888's.

The Rosso were up there with the potenzas on grip but took a while to get warm. I could spin the wheels without much effort if they were cold. Once warm though they were great.

RT615's were great on the road in the dry. Sidewall wasnt anywhere near as stiff as the potenzas or the pirellis so if you get them go for a smaller width to stretch them over the rim, they squir around other wise (I had 255 on an 8.5" rim). In the wet they are next to useless. Any power down and they will slide around. They are also not great oon the track. 2 Hot laps and they have next to no grip.

R888 are a semi-slick so wont bother I also agree with taka, the advans have by far the best reputation but not sure if you can get them here.

ohh and I would use the TR1 or Proxies instead of the "FZ4" which I have never heard of.

Michelin make the best tyres ever - they seem to get their rubber just right. Costs a lot though. Bridgestone is my second choice though ... no RE040s, but S03s.

3 Key points:

High performance
Cheap
Street Tyres

This rules out Michelin and AD07

Falken 452s Have 10000k on them and they grip well especailly in the wet, and have a very smooth ride. Quiet as can be on the road even at speed.

well I voted for the Falken because that is the only tyre I've had apart from the REO40's and they seem better . I think very few of us would have any more of an idea than that unless they do heaps of tracking .

Sorry, but high performance and cheap are mutually exclusive

I think Kall mentioned they are $300-350 on average

Michelins go for about $100 more a tyre from what I remember looking around.

Those dismissing the Michelin's on price are forgetting/do not know that they wear extremely well. So your dollar lasts longer.

Although I agree the Advans have much better grip, I still think the PS2 is the best all round compromise.

I'm not happy with the way the bridgestones wear. The first set had better wear efficiency than the second set ... the first set was at just under 50% after just under 40000kms, where this set is at sliding my **** out on wet rainy day stage at 70 ... so yer, I think I'll get 50-60000km road k's out of these tyres. If I track, I reckon they'll probably be gone in one day.

Anyway, my main issue with the bridgestones is the product is just too inconsistant.

I suggest creating a tyre compound that is as sticky as it is hard wearing.

Sell it to the highest bidder

I have toyo t1-r. I was dissapointed with grip but they are much better than the falken 215's I had before. they don't seem to wear at all. I got less than 10K km from the re40's and falkens but after about 5k the t1-r's look like new.
