It all goes round and round.
One of the earlier Mercedes sports had a roof very similar to the the RX8. MGs had freestyle pillarless doors on their K1 sports sedan 70 years ago!! etc.
I had a very knowledgeable friend (a car enthusiast and a Service Manager of many years standing) walk round the RX8 a few months ago and reel off quite a list of design elements from other cars that he could see hints of in the RX8 lines.
About the only part that I can't see any parallels to (many from the earlier days of Lotus, Lola, etc) is the back end and boot.

the sides do look exactly the same as the rx-8 especially the character line and the pumped guards.
Mercedes drivers mustn't know how to park if they need sensors on the front bumper to tell them they are about to hit something

Its actually a device to alert the driver to any nearby RX8s so they can take evasive action. Imagine how angry they would get seeing a car that looks twice as good of 20% of the price ... heheheheh

looks like hyundai is getting into the 'freestyle door' thing.
interestingly their one has B-pillar built into both front and rear door and looks like u can open the rear one directly.
it's only a concept though

oh there is also Nissan that's half 4wd/SUV/Coupe type vehicle that has 'freestyle' doors too. couldn't find pictures anywhere but saw it on a British mag.

Interesting link to that Hyundai car Playa78.
There seems to be quite a revival of the 'freestyle' door configuration. Mazda even use it on one of their Bravo utes.

the only reason why i like em is the looks, and compactability. But to get in is a pain, like when your parked on the side of the road and some1 has to get in the back with cars flying past close by, hehe i now understand why they are called suicide doors because if some1 is standing inside the door and some1 hits it lol (your gone basically).
