Oh dear - I feel like I would be too biased if I responded.

There are pleny of fellas here to sort that out though!
  • The general concenus is not to worry about a piggy back unless you are considering forced induction. There are some minor gains to be made, as per my comprehensive documentation of Ric's rebadged ECU. Try having a search, and if you can't find anything, I'm sure gomez will post the links. The RIC SHAW ECU he advertised here was made by a company that no longer exists "TSI". I think they sold about 3 units to Ric. I keep in contact with the former TSI partner, who now makes these units under a new company name. But it is no good me giving out his name/number here, as he only deals with workshops/distributors. It is my plan to resell his unit with my RX-8 screw supercharger kit in development.
  • Pipe?? Do you mean a mid pipe, or a rear muffler. Come on fellas - get behind me on this one.
  • Bars. They are probably OK. Personally, I don't have any suspension mods on my car, and I with all respect to others, my lap times are approx 2 seconds less at QR than a freinds car with RB bars F&R. As we know, there are lots of variables though, and the human factor figures big here. And I'm the first to admit I have lots to learn about driving quick as well!!

Cheers,
Hymee.

Dave

I reckon it might be worth you spending about 30 minutes on this forum, using 'search'

First, let me recommend Hymee's cat back exhaust replacement. It gives a great but not droning sound, keeps the boot much, much cooler, adds as much power as any cat back can, and is extraordinarily good value.

The UCU thing has been examined at some length, as Hymee says. The stock ECU is pretty efficient, as is the stock cold air induction (ought to stir a few people).

I reckon handling is a matter of taste, but try before you buy if possible (does Ric still have his 8?). Personally, the stock 8 is a good compromise

Re the pipe ric shaw is selling....its rear only...
Re Hymee's comprehensive blurb on Rics ECU ..where do i find this
re the sway bars.......I have become/am totally obsessed with my car and want to do something to it...

I do the Sydney Burrows drive days and don't like getting passed out of the top corner coming onto the main straight of eastern creek.... I find from 3 to 4th gear the car takes forever to wind out.... I am only taking it up to 191km p/h by the end of the staright ...Maybe my line out of the top corner could be better but I'm sure im doing around 100kms in 3rd on my exit..

I was at a BBQ today and started talking to a guy who suggested changing the diff gearing?

I'd be carful of the diff gear if I was you. I lowered the final drive by smaller tyres (235/40/18) and while you can notice the extra acceleration I'm also noticing the extra fuel consumption.
I only got 250km out of a full tank this fortnight. some is to do with changed driving style and I probably should be putting it into 5th on flat straights at 60km/h.
how extream the diff gear is I don't know but I'd bet it is more than tyres.

OK if you want the blurb and the facts on performance...here we go....

I have the rear pipes and the ECU from Ric already, the pipes sound brilliant, I got his quieter set and am very pleased.

I also bought the ECU system from him, I bought the unit with the AUX options because my intention was always to get FI for the car. I had Ric dyno the car before and after, I got a 6kw gain. Not a real gain in my books.

I then drove the car on the street and it felt much faster, the *** dyno told me I had good gains.......HOWEVER I was wrong. The ECU makes very little, if any difference to your cars performance. I did street drives with other RX8 owners and found I had nothing on them. I thought OK I will take it to the track, I have done two Burrows drive days and a range of other days at eastern creek. I exit the turn at the top of the straight at between 112 -115km/h. Foot to the floor and very late braking I have managed 198km/h. Generally 194-196 is the order of the day.

This is exactly the same as stock RX-8's. The car definately sounds faster with the exhaust, however it is not.

I would get the exhaust for the sound and the sway bars for the stability....however forget the ECU.

This is from experience and not a story from a mate's mate.

If you want to compare vehicles before you do it, then let me know and I am happy to do a burrows drive day or a street drive with you, however in the famous words of Public Enemy "Don't believe the hype"..

Gibbo,

That was very well written. Thanks for your input!

Does Ric still use the stock tips on his muffler? dbrx8, if you want a better looking tip...

Cheers,
Hymee.

So you are the Dave with Blue RX-8 that Luke (O'Neill) was talking about?

How are you I am Steve (or more known us Taka here).

There are plenty of great stuff for the RX-8 but I think you should start off with the suspension mod.

I cannot agree with you more Gibbo

I have no doubt that piggyback will gain a kW or 2. Or 6 in my case, but in a track it is very minimal. You can lose that in one poor corner.

Stop wasting time on the ECU, get a lightened flywheel instead. Pipe is good for the sound factor, the sway and strut is 2 seconds (as Hymee said). Semi slick and suspension too, another 4 second there. Lighten flywheel, clutch, final drive mod, another 2 seconds there. Hymee blower - priceless :D

DBRX8 have we met out there at the Burrows days, I met a guy out there who owns a blue RX8 that brings his dad to the days to watch. He is fairly tall with a shaved head.

Is that you? If so we talked about performance one of the days.

Just curious if that is you.

Regards
Gibbo.

Well said Gibbo and others. I agree.

Now that we are done with that... Gibbo, how's the Rotormaster turbo coming along?

Well, the issue of the engine light remaining on has always been a big issue for me. The guys at rotor master were adamant that it was due to the higher flow of O2, however I have spoken to a number of people world wide already with turbos and none of them have the issue. I was just concerned that there was something wrong because of the light remaining on and as such said I wouldn't get it until that issue was fixed. To date no fix.... so no turbo.
I guess my next hope is Hymee.........or waiting until my lease is up and selling the car and buying an M3 or the new 911 (Can I say that here??)

I just miss the straight line speed combined with RX8 handling.

That's a shame. Looks like Rotormaster went public a bit too soon with their turbo.

oops, sorry yea I meant grey, what was I thinking.

Well anyway, definately get the exhaust and the sway bars, but forget the ECU. If you want to throw a bit more money at it get a very very good set of tyres, that shouldset you back about $2,000 - $2,500. They would make more impact than the ECU.
