Good Friday has certainly been very good from a project progress perspective. :D

Today, with the help from one of my employees (TIG welding Guru - because I can't TIG weld ) I completed the exhaust system. :mrgreen: It took a bit of effort...and I'm stoked with the result. You may remember from an earlier post that I was using a JDM aftermarket NC rear muffler assembly. It had a 2.5" inlet that split into two 2.5" pipes. However, due to the higher flow requirements of my engine, a 3.0" front section is required. Two 2.5" pipes have about a 39% larger cross-sectional area when compared to a single 3.0" pipe. So I lopped off the 2.5" inlet and massaged a 3.0" to the profile of the 2 x 2.5" junction.

Anyhow, before I got stuck into that I sorted a problem with the standard NC exhaust heat shield. The heat shield is an aluminised fibreglass moulding that had been damaged at some point and had sagged....problem solved....2 x oversized heat rivets. :mrgreen:




Since the rear section of exhaust was stainless steel, I continued with the theme and had exhaust flanges laser cut (and machined where necessary).




Will all exhaust systems I make for my vehicles I use the good ol' masking tape to join the various bends and straight sections prior to welding it out....reduces the chances of a stuff-up.

...after many hours this was the end result. This is the rear assembly with the 3.0" inlet and 3-bolt flange fitted.






This is the front section that connects up to the headers. Look Mum no cat!!! 8)




.....fitted to the car. I'm stoked with the result.








I also took the opportunity to fit the Mazdaspeed front bar. It certainly provides a bigger aperture for ambient air to access the radiator.








By this time it was getting late, but I did get to fit the right hand rear footplate for the roll cage.




Can't wait of next weekend to continue with the rollcage.

nice transition from the 3" pipe. it's sure going to be loud with a 3" no cat systems and the flow of a supercharger!

During the week I made first contact with Phil Laird (the engine management supplier / tuner) to make arrangements for the installation of the Motec M400. It looks like that in mid to late June he will have a gap in his busy schedule to start the installation. :D This timing is pretty good as the supercharger kit should be available not long after.

A little bit more progress was made today with the removal of the dash and chassis/dash wiring looms. I also removed the remaining section of carpet and firewall lining so that I can get some dry ice and remove the few sections of sound deadener. This all needs to be sorted before the cage gets welded in.

Not too much has happened in the past fortnight .

Spent a few hours yesterday paring out the extraneous crud from the dash and interior chassis looms . I successfully removed the SRS (airbag & seat belt pre-tensioner) system and the wiring to the instrument cluster. I still probably need around another 12 hours on it before putting it back in the chassis.






Another point of note is that I have ordered the Motec ECU. 8) After another discussion with the tuner regarding my expectations, it was determined that the M800 was required as I needed servo control for the oil metering pump.




.....oops, I almost forgot that I now have a tow vehicle to move this thing once it is finished. It's the one on the left! .

haha...that would be nice! I've certainly thrown a bit of coin their way over the past 20 years.

 

I SO want a Hymee SC now. That fitment looks awesome, and some good numbers on the charts. It'd be a crime to refit the standard engine cover over the top of that work of art!

Now how can I get $10grand without the missus noticing???????? (which seems like a great price by the way)

The wait was certainly worth it....get a load of these puppies!!! :P

Picked them up from the machinist yesterday.








They fit the caliper...which is a good start. :D








Will see if the fit the rest of the brake assembly tomorrow. Fingers crossed! :D

Ha, cant be as bad as a CX-7. Since moving the family RX-8 off to its new owner I have been moving a lot more petrol into our CX-7 compared to the previous RX-8.

CX-7 = 10.5lt / 100km

average CTY

RX-8 = 13.5lt / 100km
CX-7 = 16.5lt / 100km

We now return you to regular MX-5R programming.

We've only just used the first tank of fuel Dave. I'll let you know how the economy is going after this next tank.


Well I trial fitted the front brake assembly today....this is how it went. :mrgreen:

Bare upright and hub.




Caliper bracket fitted.






Rotor fitted.




...caliper fitted :twisted: .








The last test was to see whether the track rims (Enkei RPF in 18 x 8.5) would clear the brake assembly.









I couldn't have been happier with the result as there is plenty of clearance both radially and laterally....another box ticked. :D The caliper brackets will be hard anodised before the car hits the track.


For the rest of the day I continued paring out the wiring loom. It's slow getting smaller.

If anything, I would have thought this car will be overbraked. It'll be a pretty light car when he's done. Can't see it being too hard on brakes, even with the performance potential.

I suppose you could cut vents in the front guards aft of the wheels to allow heat to escape...

 

You're correct Dave and for that very reason I'm sticking with the road spec brake pads.
