Thumbs up power output ???

our american and british rx8 deviots are once again on the warpath re dyno testing and power outputs , has mazda once again given us wrong figures relating to out puts ??

Mazda should clear up this issue before it effects the confidence o

f the rx8 owners or future buyers .

HELL HAS NO FURRY THAN THAT OF A MISLEAD RX8 LOVER .

The performance numbers done by mags that used production cars (eg wheels) seems to indicate there's nothing wrong with the power. Maybe it's a run-in thing or maybe it's something to do with the way the car is run on a dyno I don't know.

I doubt you're getting robbed of power though. Surely Mazda wouldnt make that mistake (again)!

I asked the MAZDA tech dept in Melbourne this question when I picked up the car. I also asked whether there are any fuel control maps that are altered following 'bedding in' or after a certain mileage. They were unaware of anything remotely like this and are certainly not taught this on the various courses.

I mentioned dyno issues in the states and they too were unaware of this.

Please MAZDA people who read this forum, can you comment on this......I'm sure Oz customers will dyno soon enough and we will all be very interested in the results.

I agree that the various reviews indicate good times etc and that this may well be a red herring. Given that it is over the 6k mark that appears to have the problem and I am babying car for first 1000k I can't comment on the feel of the car at this rev range, anyone else?

Question

Having covered 765km so far car feels great ,but its impossible to tell total power output unless you dyno the car my rx8 mechanic says that you can loose up to 30% on dyno testing the americans say only 17% loss , eventually the right figures will surface .

Simmon debbie even if mazda or their technicians were aware of any issues involving the car and its fuel mapping or power output figures they would not .comment.

From my experience with car manufacturers they have a deny p

olicy similar to BILL CLINTONS , And monica lewinskies .

THEonly minor flaw that i have noticed is that i am running a rich fuel mixture as my car leaves a very fine dust like particle near the exhaust and rear end ? any one else notice??, but this is only a minor adjustment.

expect a 30% loss between flywheel and rear wheels.

expect between 120kw and 125kw at rear wheels, depending on:
- calibration of dyno
- ambient temperature
- air flow over car - no good in a stuffy shop
- what gear you're in (usually 4th - which gives a direct drive ratio).

The most important thing is to dyno before and after mods, always on the same dyno, preferably at the same time of day, same weather etc. Not a particularly precise science given the variations in parameters.

I'd be confident that Mazda are not overstating the power output - usually manufacturers do the opposite for some reason.

Of most interest is gauging the impact of:
- freer exhaust
- freer intake - does the RX-8 have the same piddling little intake slot above the radiator that is chocked full of foam??? The one I saw at Mazda Aus did... that's gotta go.
- remapped ECU - or if not possible a unichip - or better yet a programmable EMS/Motec etc.

Can't wait to see how the "modding" goes for all you lucky b@stards who've got their cars...

me? still have to wait - october now - not mazda - my financials

grrrrr

ricdanger sorry to hear about your delay to october ,but hey its better late than never.

Why are the americans quoting a 17% dyno loss i understand that the loss can be as high as30% surely dynos are dynos.

hey guys, glad too see your getting your cars.mines due next week.i think the confusion in the dyno numbers over here is due to the fact mazda claimed 204 to 207 rwhp in the press confrence prior to usa release.im not sure if its 17% or 30 % or what but i test drove a hi-power yesterday and i dont care, the car is powerful, fast and unlike anything ive ever driven.:D

I agree with msydd.... you gotta be carefull, it's FAST!

Even at no more than 7k rpm (and WOW what a sound when you up there) it's damn quick.

Flying!

I'm babying under 6k and this engine is outstanding.

I've had 12A; 13B and 12A turbo (in that hp order) and this feels nothing like those engines ( ie much better).

Mazda have done fantastic work here (touch wood!)
