Guys,
I have read things on this list over the past few months about using only "Mazda Rotary Oil", but noticed in the owners manual that they suggest any oil is ok, provided it has the correct rating. There was no mention of mineral based or synthetic. Of course Mazda are going to recommend their Mazda oil, but could it possibly be any better than Mobil 1/Castrol R etc?

 

I don't know if I should say this....

I am preparing Timbo will go off in any minute.

There have been about 20000 posts about engine oil = no real answer.

EDIT: I think as long as it is not corn, sunflower or olive oil, polyunsaturated or saturated. It will be ok. BTW I think Rotary oil is/at least was Castrol made

 

I guess Kalli has a point. If Mazda oil is being used at the service, best to top up with the same. We shouldn't be mixing oils.

how come two stroke motors use clean burning synthetic oils to stop engine deposits but we use mineral oil for supposedly the same reason?

 

Like Taka, I'm nervous about Timbo if we continue this oil thing too long but ...

My owner's manual says that the temperature range of 5W-30 oil is from -30 degrees to 40 degrees. On the day I had my last service the temperature here was 42 degrees which seems to me to be stretching the capacity of 5W-30. At the other end of the scale, despite living in Canberra, we never get anywhere near -30.

My manual seems to say that 10W-50, covering a range of -20 to 50 degrees, is a more suitable oil for Australian cars.

Maybe we're the victims of a Euro-US big market bias on the part of Mazda -- "we're making this oil suitable for the cooler climate mass markets, and Australia will just have to put up with it".

 

My patience is surprising even myself :o...I suggest you all conduct a search on 'oil' in this forum, and report back with succinct conclusions ....

And, even though I am tempted -- very tempted -- to offer supportive comments to Jellybean's analysis re the range covered by the Mazda oil, I shall refrain...

Tim is right timbo, the search feature is stuffed ATM. I have started a thread about it....

 

Always good to occasionally repeat important topics IMHO. Some people may not have even been aware of the particular issue - a bit hard to search for something when you aren't aware of it.

Those old timers who are bored rigid by the repetition can just close the thread and move on - a la exercising censorship on the telly with the right thumb on the remote, which is always quicker than whinging about something you don't wish to see.

 

It works both ways. It is forum etiquette that you search before starting a new thread. Oil is a topic that has been done to death....even limiting your search to the Oz forum will answer most questions (when the search feature is fixed :p )

 

I understand the etiquette point and respect it but let's say something has been a closed topic for some time. Not all of us have read everything ever posted (those who have should have a good hard look at themselves ). If we all did searches and answered our questions that way it would never be raised again and:

1. Those of us who were never aware of the closed topic or thought to look into it would never be any wiser.

2. Those of us who have gained more experience and therefore have something extra to add which may benefit us all may never contribute that knowledge.

I'm not suggesting that the whole topic needs to be re-invented again but if some newbie raises it in all innocence it takes only a few seconds to point them in the right direction, thus guiding us all to a wider appreciation of what has gone on before we joined in.

 

Since the search feature is dead, I'll put this issue to bed .

We don't use mineral oil for that reason. We use mineral oil because some older synthetics used to damage the "o" rings in earlier Rotary engines. Mazda then placarded their Rotary's with an under-bonnet decal stating only mineral oil was suitable for use in the Rotary.

The Renesis has improved "o" rings that are more durable, however Mazda still recommend the use of a quality mineral oil. Here is a bulletin I got from my Service Manager early last year.
