Angry Oil Overfill at 1st Service

Folks,

Just a word of caution. Had the first service a week ago (1000Ks) and got the filter and oil changed.

Decided to check the oil a few days later on the weekend before going for a drive and found the service people had overfilled the oil by over half a litre! Not good at all. I was verry pissed off.

Canceled the drive and took it to the dealer on the Monday morning. They had to drain the excess oil.

Suggest you all check your oil post having it serviced. Half a litre extra in the system at high revs and the seals could have been seriously damaged.

If the big dealers can't service the cars right suggest we find local specialists in the big cities and take our cars there.

Cheers, Stoli

did they change your oil baffles?

I'd ask for my money back... it doesn't get much simpler than changing the oil... if they can't do that they don't deserve to be paid.

The dealer is in the Burwood area.

No they didn't change the baffles. I have not had the oil warning light issue....yet.

does the dealer sound like a wine manufacturer? i bought my mx-5 from them 10 years ago was was treated quite badly with the service. i eventually went to mulgrave for better service. i'm at essendon mazda now.

when i'm taking my car in for an oil change, do you think it is wise to remind not to over fill or will they think i'm being a pedantic DH?

seems to be worth teling them to save bring it back to drain excess oil.

cheers

Be as pedantic and paranoid as your heart desires - you're parting with a lot of money and you're also parting with money for the service.

Nothing wrong with making sure you get exactly what you pay for. You don't need to be aggressive, just firm and friendly :D

Go hard on making certain the tyre pressures are correct too!

Angry

I'm just refreshing this thread as a warning!

At my 10K service, my oil was overfilled as well. Luckily, I checked before I drove off (don't know why, a voice from the forum.....) ... way over the top mark.

THEN, I looked at the service receipt, and I had been billed for 4.5 litres of Mobil1.

With a Velocity Red face , I walked back inside and calmly drew my concern to the attention of the SM -- who promptly fixed both problems, muttering darkly about kicking a certain someone's ****

This dealer has looked after me well, and no damage on this occasion ... but you would all be best to assume incompetence

Mobil1 0W-40, which is fully synthetic.

I've seen enough confused threads on the topic of non-synth v synth to feel comfortable about this oil.

Thanks timbo.

BTW... Has anyone seen anything in writing from Mazda yet?... They were supposed to be bringing out their special oil in November.

My dealer (west end Parramatta) says the retail pack stock are not yet available so they generously gave me a litre from their bulk drum and said I could pop back if I need more.

Having read lots of posts about high oil use, I'm obviously not driving hard enough. 3800km since service and have just dropped below the high tide mark!..

BTW, the oil is still REALLY clear .....

I put in .5L at 2000km's Was half way down the dipstick between L and H. Topped up mine with some Valvoline 10w-30 Non-synthetic.

I'll do an oil change at 5000kms because I live close to work and I do lots of short trips. Hopefully Mazda will have their act together before then.

I'm using Castrol Formula R 5W-30 fully synthetic based on some earlier advice from the forum. Added 1.5L in the first 6000km and no problems. Since then I've had the oil pan replaced and hence got a free oil change.

Ermm.. just to throw a fly in the oil as it were..

but I didn't pay for my first service at 1,000 km folks - and they appear [ Euro Mazda at Artarmon ] to have done a pretty decent job of it..

not even the cost of oil et al by the way..

for a $70k car, why are you paying for your first 1,000 ( ****, will ya look at that - the bloody thing's still running! ) service!?

just my $0.00 cents worth ( what I paid for the service ) ..

Dez, I don't think any of us paid for our first service at 1,000 km … but then they DON'T change your oil or filter at that service now, either -- unless you ask them!

I did, cos I have that old fashioned belief about bits of metal floating around from running in motors , and they did (paid $63) -- and then I had the oil level light thing, so my oil was changed again at 5,000 km. On neither of these occasions was I overfilled. But they managed it a 10,000 km (where I paid, initally, $237.30 which included 4.5 litres of oil [think about it!] and I would have to admit I probably got all that oil, initially)

Keep an eye on 'em. Seems to me that all the qualified mechanics are keen to work on cars like the 8 when they are new, but soon the novelty wears off, and then you get the apprentices doing the oil change

Hmm.. shall do.. good advice!

I hadn't considered the whole "bits of new metal floating around" issue.. I wonder if it's worth the 30 min trip back to the service centre and drinking more of that god awful coffee while they do that for the sake of $60 odd dollars?

Well, my definition is (after the appropriate 5 minute wait) oil on the dipstick WELL over the top mark (say, 1cm) and then seeing that I have been charged for 4.5L of oil at the service, where the oil+filter change capacity is 3.5L

At my 1st I paid for the oil 3.5l (with a 'free' litre thrown in .. he he ... d'oh) , the filer and the environmental levy as well as GST.

The coffee must be to a Mazda strandard brew (oh yeah sure) as it was lousy at Parra too
