Ester based synthetics cost that much. You'll find that they have much better shear characteristics and have a mixture of additives that help protect the engine better than the dino oil we use.

You're right though, taking into account that we burn about a third of the oil from our sump every 10000km breakdown of the oil isn't much of a concern, however for those running a non standard OMP setup, synthetic oil would be of benefit due to the fact that a $90 oil will generally last twice as long as a standard mineral oil on the road and perform better at much higher temperatures.

So taking that into consideration, on a stock engine it's not worth it.

Well well well....

Rotary is different from piston engine because rotary has engine oil in the chamber where combustion happens.

When piston does the same... the owner freaks out. Saw one such Ferrari owner lately!

So we have engine oil in the combustion chamber. Be careful what you put in and what burns better (leaving no residue) is the best.

We use and recommend Motul 4000 motion and 4100 power.

Motion is a 15W50 mineral based oil.

4100 Power is an Ester based synthetic.

I have used both in FD`s and RX8`s without issue.

Motion is $40 for 5 litres retail

4100 Power is $50 retail

Perhaps we should do a test ourselves. Burn a few different oils on a metallic surface and see which one leaves the least amount of varnish
