Unhappy Odometer accuracy

One for the pedants!

I tested my odometer this morning against the 5k test strips on the Hume Hwy between Sydney and Goulburn and found my odometer reads 5.1k over the 5k test length (ie, 2% over) -- no wheel spin, I promise

That seems a tad high for a modern vehicle, although, of course, tyre wear needs to be accounted for, and so I guess the odometer is calibrated with this in mind.

However, my previous car - V6 Astina - was very accurate, as is my wife's also new Calais.

Any thoughts? (apart from the obvious "how sad is this guy! -- I run Canberra-Sydney-Canberra weekly, so any amusement is worthwhile)

Interesting.... In the Aug03 Wheels magazine comparison of the RX-8 and 350Z, they state that when the RX-8 is indicating 100km/h, it is actually doing 97. That 's a 3% error, so we have two independant sources that both agree that the car is slightly over-reading. On the plus side, that 2-3% may save you from getting a speeding ticket, and god knows I need all the help I can get!

Dunno about elswhere, but in UK/Europe The speedo cant legaly under read.

It has to always show correct or greater speeds (i.e. 100 when doing 97) a few percentage out (higher) isnt a bad thing.

It's quite contrary to what we believe that, the modern cars speedo is rarely 100% spot on, as we can see with most car's reviews which state that 100k on the speedo will usually be actual speed of ranging from 95 to 98k/h.And may be a rare case with 100k/h actual speed.

My speedo appears to be quite accurate.
<Pause, while the Labrat coughs in embarrassment>.
Returning home after my 100km service along an unfamiliar road, still not used to the car. By accident, got into the outside lane, and accelerated only very slightly to safely cross over to the left. Checked the speedo, **** 77kph, braked, too late, a cop waves me over. Sir, did you realize you were doing 76kph in a 60 zone? I won't bore you with the rest.

...and you said - no I wasn't, I was doing 77kph!!!

:D

I know what you mean, the power in 4th and 5th is deceptive - even when you're just using the accel button on the cruise control.

I find I'm using cruise a lot, just to avoid speeding too often.

Was wondering who'd have the dubious honour of getting the first speeding ticket in the RX-8

Pepe

About 10 minutes after I picked up my car and left the dealership, I managed to not see one of Canberra's infamous Mecedes vans just after taking off from the lights on Hindmarsh Drive at the Jerrabomberra Ave intersection, heading towards Fyshwick. Nothing in the mail yet, but I did see my speedo heading over 90 just as I saw the van!

Me too. A speed camera got me back on the 9th August. I sent them a letter and $11 to get them to send me the photo. Figure I might as well frame it. I don't have any other photo's of me while I am driving the car!

I'm looking for a reduction in business with the boys in blue, having sold my CBR a week before taking delivery of the RX8 !!!

Yeah, I agree. I'm surprized at how quickly I'm putting miles on my car. You could be on to something. Then again it could be that I just love driving my car and am drving it more than usual. :D
I haven't tried to do any known distance tests, I am just basing this on the average weekly miles I used to put on my Toyota.

Hehehe - You Legend! I would have hoped the rest of the story is something like...

"We pulled you over so we could have a look at the car mate. Take care in future, and be responsible. No need to book you this time..." If you were dispaying some cleavage it might have happend like that...

I miss the over-speed alarm I had on the SS Holden. Although it was annoying at times, it did remind me on the freeway when I pushed the boundary.
