New Paint Care

Hi all,

New member and soon to be owner of an MY06 RX8 (expected delivery date is some time next week).

I've read a lot of stuff so far on the forums and have found some very valuable information, so thanks to all who've contributed such good info.

I bought my car without the Paint Protection, Interior Protection, Rust protection and those 50 other types that they offer you once u think your just going to pay your deposit and walk out the door. From what i've read people's opinions on whether this is a worthwhile purchase or not seems to differ greatly.

Anyway, point being i have none of this 'protection' whatsoever, so when I get the car home I'd like to spend my first weekend doing what I can do protect her from the elements.

I was hoping some of you could offer me advice on what steps to take and products to use to clean, protect and seal my paintjob and my interior as much as possible. I'd like to think I am getting as good (if not better) a level of protection as the stuff that the dealer was going to charge me some thousands of dollars for.

I currently have a big stock of Meguiars stuff at home (Tech Wax, Crystal Polish, Clay Bar, Nxt Generation Car wash...), but will consider switching brands and getting new products if they'd help keep my paint job brand spanking new for as long as possible. Recommended leather cleaners/protectors would also be appreciated.

Anyway, that's enough from me..looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Thanks a lot guys.

I think you did the right thing saving your money. Personally, unless you park next to the ocean and in the sun all day I reckon most of that 'protection' stuff is bunkum.

I think the Meguiar's gear is as good as any but others may disagree - this can be a highly subjective topic.

Meguiar's sell a range of interior products, including a leather cleaner and conditioner.

Welcome to the club - hope you enjoy your new wheels.

I researched it, followed the accepted advice. That is, wash the car with a certain brand of dishwashing liquid!! Then wash with car wash, followed by polishing and waxing. Honestly i wouldn't bother, the car was already stripped of protective wax, washed and rewaxed. Just enjoy it, don't worry bout the paint until it gets dirty then wash carefully with your chosen products. Quick detailer is great just to clean bird poo and small spots of tar.
enjoy the finish mate, caus it doesn't get any better

I have to say, I dont reckon it does much for the paint in terms of protection, but it definately brings out a different colour in the paint work. I remember a few times with my Yellow SP20 parking next to another and thinking they definatly dont have PP and I think mine looks a lot nicer. More glossy, brighter, etc.

I invested in a Swissol kit when I got my '8

http://www.swissol.com/E/AUS/Home.htm I found Keith Tapsall a very nice fellow to deal with.

Cheers,
Hymee.

I went through the same agony as you...have had my 8 for about 3 months now...it's sitting in the garage....dirty and in need of a vacuum...but it's clean underneath! I have bought the Meguirs products..and also invested in a proper washing mitt and chamois....I don't have paint progtection and never have on any new car I have owned...depends on how long you are going to keep the car for..I only keep them for 3 years and then on to the next one... As long as you remove any bird poos and tar etc.. give it a polish every now and then...really paint is quite resilient these days....

Enjoy the car and drive it.....cleaning it's only half the fun!!
