Interesting. We always thought (from some US advice) that the 6th digit was the "version" number. But I suppose with that many digits it was always gunna be a bit more complex than that simplification.

So I guess we need to christen it. Gomez gets the bananas for it. The "Kiwi" flash. That is because the box it is in is all black.

And if anyone has a go at me about political correctness (references to race and religion) you can go and get... umm... flashed. :o

Cheers,
Hymee.

What do you guys think of this new flash. I would like to know if I am going bonkers.

It does not seem any faster/slower to me, but it does feel a lot smoother right through the rev range.

And I swear that the car is now quieter through the hymee exhaust - not much, but noticeable. I still have the burble though, phew. Am I dreaming?

Oh yeah - and I still have a rough idle, right after servicing. Does everyone else? It is quite uneven.

Does the idle smooth out a bit if you turn the A/C off? Or even lift the RPM a little?

That is what mine is like, and I'm still on G.

Cheers,
Hymee.

I noticed after my 10k service that the idle is now rough, before the service it was ok, they seam to have dropped the revs on idle.

The ONLY difference I have noticed, is a reduced tendency to pop on the overrun.....so I'd say this "Kiwi" flash is a little leaner. Idle is as per the "G" flash. No economy figures yet...let you know next week.

I have done a tank now of normal driving & I would say the economy is much the same. Maybe just slighlty better but not by much.

AC??? I never turn that power sucking device on

Yes it does smooth out if I lift the revs a bit, always seemed to me like it was idling about 100rpm too low. Ah well must be normal!

Got my new air bag and flash done today.

Initial impressions of the flash is positive. When I floored it I found myself changing before the buzzer sounded when going from 1st to 2nd where as before I would change around 9k.

Does this mean more power at lower revs???

More testing required :D

Regards

So far I have done nearly 300km since filling up. The needle on the fuel gauge has just touched the half tank mark!!! :D and I was not driving the car like an old granny either.

This new flash is giving me a lot better fuel economy.

That's awesome skc, are you doing lots of highway?

Fuel economy is just the same for me. But I have noticed the ABS clink at the start is no longer there.

I have another observation for the new flash and I am wondering if anyone else has noticed this:

I think they have played with the DSC programming. I find that I am getting a lot less DSC lights than I used to with the old flash. More-over, several times I have experienced oversteer in the wet and have manaully corrected it without any DSC intervention what-so-ever. In the past I would have always had the DSC cut the power, or at the very least seen a "delayed" DSC light after the event. These seem to have disappeared. I also lost traction taking off from the lights the other day and once again no DSC to prevent wheelspin.

Anyone else noticed the DSC activating less than before?

I wonder if these aparrent DSC things affect the susecptibility to throw the ABS/DSC light on the chassis dyno

Cheers,
Hymee.

I drove to Kirra Beach on the Gold Coast for a few nights holiday in peak hour last friday. So technically I was driving on the freeway however most part was frustrating and slow going.

I hate slow drivers on the fast lane and I was constantly changing lanes from the far left to the far right to maintain my speed once the traffic had thinned out.

Coming back was good on Monday afternoon. I sat on 120 for most of the way with the occassional spurts above that speed. The tacho for most of the trip was close to the 4k rpm. I understand fuel consumption is high once you go past 3500.

I also noticed an increased tendancy to wheen spin without DSC intervention.

Regards

So far there seems to be some positive reports on this new flash. I have not done it yet. Sco and I would like to do some logging before/after with the sCANalyser and see if there is any obvious trends.

That thing about "Fuel Consumption is high beyond 3500 RPM" is in reference to SDAIS and the aux injectors. This is only in WOT type of conditions. At cruising conditions in "closed loop" operation (fairly light throttle), the air flow into the engine, hence the fuel used is basically proportional to the engine RPM. (Not counting the increased drag when going faster).

Cheers,
Hymee.

Some great info on this thread. My service guy better have somewhere to sit down when I next bring the car in - it's gonna take a while.

More driving in the wet over the last couple of days. DSC is definately less intrusive than before. It used to let you get away with just about anything, but not any more! Twice now I have had to manually correct oversteer with DSC no where to be seen.

Could it be that your new tyres Nankangs are not as grippy in the wet as you thought , i doubt that they would have changed the DSC settings .

The Hymster said he was going to check on a comparisum of his ride with the G flash to SCO CAR WITH THE H FLASH ON HIS S canaliser to see the differences in their rides .

cheers

I haven't noticed any change for the better with the fuel economy.

We will only be able to check some engine managenemt things, such as timing and AFRs. We won't be able to check DSC - it is nothing to do with ODBII.

I would be surprised if the functionality of the DSC was dependant on a certain level of grip. It is just reacting to the loss of grip, based on yaw rates etc.

It would be interesting to get a commant from Mazda to see if there is any difference in the DSC thresholds between the old and the new calibrations.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Brand of tyre & grip makes no difference. DSC is triggered when it senses understeer, oversteer, or a loss of traction. What got the car into this situation is irrelevant as far as the DSC is concerned. It will kick in as soon as the car goes outside the DSC threshold. The ECU can't tell if the road is wet or not, it only knows that somehow you got yourself sideways, and it's job is to correct it.
