it's been a long time since I've posted here.
I have a major issue that i need the sound advise from the experts on this forum have..

basically my situation is this.. last night, the car started losing power and eventually could not drive.. the exhuast sound is also not right...
I had to get the car towed to Mazda servicing over night.
they've got the car now and today gave me a ring that the problem was faulty ignition coil which caused one of the rotor to fail and also pump the petrol into the catalytic converter...... the car has been little under 5 years so it is obviously out of warranty..
now they have given me repair quote estimate of $4500 for genuine part replacement and even with 3rd party part, it is over $2000....
can anybody advise me if there are any other rotory mechanics i should see who could help me fix it cheaper as I don't think I can bear the repair cost of $4000+....

 

For start ignition coil is only little over $200 in the current exchange rate.

Aftermarket cat from Japan is around..... $1800. Or precisely just under 100000 Yen or about $1600.

You are right $2K... but the upside is you have done some mod. Look at the spark plug too while you are changing coil, sometimes the coil fail sooner because the plug are not changed regularly enough.

Can you drive a petrol soaked cat for a while before changing it...?

you are tops~ I got some research to do and hard decision to make now...

 

A new set of coils from the US onlinemazdaparts ...Jason Mc Baggie delivered to your door for $ 230 should get you going better than ever , your cat should be fine .

Dont let the local Mazda stearlerships rip you off you only need new coils and theres most likely no need to replace your catalyctic converter

Agree with Michael. Can I stress that while you are ordering from Jason, get a set of new spark plug too. They are either the cause or the result of the faulty ignition coil.

 

And while you're at it, you may as well check and replace the leads too.

I don't go to any track day now without my spare set of plugs, coils and leads in the boot. Never know when they're going to go bung! And means you don't get raped by a stealership when you're far from home...

 

do you guy reckon? they were advising me that the raw fuel went in there and has caused damage... the car does sound horribly wrong and gets no power to even move in 1st gear.. like one of the rotor is dead.. I will see if I can get them to just try replace the coils first then..

Yup you need to buy 4 of them.

you can probably install them yourself.

 

Theres nothing wrong with your catalyctic converter trust me a lot of us have gone through this before you only need 4 new coils ,( 4 new sparkplugs and 4 new leads .) if they havent been changed for a while .

The small amount of fuel that may have gone to the catalyctic converter would burn up or evaporate fairly quickly .

Get everything done at a rotary mechanicks not at Mazda if you cannot do it yourself or get help from fellow Sydney forum rotary member .

sorry but I had already ordered mine..
the 4 sets of coils cost me around AUD$200 inlcuding shipping..

I am hoping this will fix the whole issue, although the dealer guys are adamant that the catalytic converter is toasted and will need to be replaced..

Just update on my issue.
I have received the coil from US yesterday. So I've dropped them off to the local dealer where my car is in for the repair.
I will report the damage ($$$) once they get back to me, which I am hoping asap but with new year's it maybe until next week..

To give final update on this problem.

I've finally picked up my car from the dealer this morning.
After replacing the coils, the car is driving as good as ever..
The dealer thinks there is still cutouts at the top end (BS..) or something but I haven't noticed it. The WDS didn't return any errors.
The total damage in the end was approx $200 for 4xcoils (inc. shipping from US) and $150 for the diagnosis and replacement from dealer for labour..

Without consulting you guys and got good advice, I could have been conned into $4000+ repair job by the dealer!! (although I'm sure I wouldn't have gone thru with it) Thank you all for helping out fellow 8 owner to make smart decision.

Just the same problem and had the coils replace which I think was nonsence. mine is definately the catalyc converter. diagnosed by me not mazda but confirmed by them. It is intermittent and seems to be worse in hot weather. the car wont even idle with the air on at times. Great when it 40 degrees. Also no powere bbecause of the back pressure. I was quoted $4000 and said no. My RX8 has done 180000 ks and still has the original clutch.
This problem occured at one time when i was getting unburnt fuel thru the exhaust system with catostrophic results . Mazda did come to the party as it was there lack of correct diagnosis that caused the problem. Any way i belive that dstroyed the converter. I have had an increasing rattle coming from the exhaust and was told it just was some loose baffles but it continued worsen.
Any way now can anyone suggest how I can replace the exhaust sytem without robbing a bank

What I believe happens is the fuel in the cat ignites as a result the substrate collapses.

If the cat has gone, I would suggest you go to your local exhaust shop and ask them to quote on a replacement.

the smb cat pipe is great design and looks like it would be a big improvement over the std one and it's only around $700 for a full bolt-on stainless hi-flow cat.

you can get cheaper cats from a local exhaust shop however you never know what quality you will get.

 

I am eyeng for a neew cat con this week. I just want to ask what brand should I go? $4500 is quite high for me.

 

Just for others out there. I recently bought a set of coils from race roots, Express delivered for just over $200.

Can't wait to get them, as l'm driving an AU Falcon at the moment...
