nojooc,

The 8 looks great with the wheels and the zorst sounds cool. I saw you 1 week ago, I was on the HumeHWY Chullorra heading towards Bankstown, having some fun with a white ZR Celica off the lights.
HKS intake looks great, should dyno your car at Daves from SAS,he's working on some ECU stuff for the RX8.
I dynoed the car stock & with a High Flo Cat so he can have some base curves.

Dats a piece of art IMO. So eager to install it when i first saw it in a local HKS distributor shop.

The price was also $1000SGD. Think should be abt the same as AUD after conversion...
In the end, it was gonna be too huge a hole for me pocket...

Hopefully, they will slash the price soon ya....:D

Your logic is quite convincing. But I digress.

The only way the OEM system could possibly be improved upon is if it made positive pressure in the manifold.

Modest gains? I have yet to see an un-doctored dyno sheet, let alone one that shows a gain beyond the statistical error limit.
What is a modest gain? Did it make more than 15 or 20 HP? Anything less is not worth the trouble IMNSHO, let alone nearly $800 USD. Not even $180 USD (the price of the K&N). 20 HP would equate to a 3 MPH trap speed increase and .2 seconds at absolute best. The 3 - 5 HP claimed by these intake manufacturers are practically unmeasureable.
To make more power, it would have to aleviate a restriction in the intake - something the OEM box just doesn't have.

Aftermarket RX-8 intakes are for looks and sound. If you like that sort of thing, than more power to you.

My question is why are all the manufacturers making the box air filter style intakes? When is someone going to make a real cold-air intake? I saw a Japanese version one but only works in the JDM rx-8 because our USDM have somekind of extra crash bar or something?
I saw the front of the intake there is an outlet there why does not someone make it extend out to the bumper isntead of a filter in a hot box?

Is that gap in the box made on purpose?

nice looking air filter box though

The OEM box is already hooked up to a duct that runs to a cool air area near the headlight.
I suppose if wanted to, you can drop the pickup into the area in front of the radiator.
Not necessary, though.
The air intake temps in motion are ambient with the OEM setup.

again your still not understanding why people purchase this system...everyone on this forum already understands that there is not a whole lot of power to be made with an aftermarket intake system...obviously we are not buying the horsepower (which is your main point) but buying a good quality product...keep in mind we drive $30k+ cars...have you personally seen the k&n intake kit? Look at the build quality it has... and their heat shield?? whats up with that?..I'm sure that big gapping hole around the tube will insulate it...and whats up with idling issues?? "Me" personally i would much rather pay a little more money for something better than for a product of lesser quality... btw heres the dyno sheet..

That does what? The OEM box isn't high enough quality? The OEM box certainly looks more fitting under the hood than some oddly-shaped aluminum box.

I have the K&N. I bought it so I could cut it up for parts in my turbo system. I installed it for giggles before I rework the tube. No idle issues and it is well engineered, for what it is - a tube with a filter at one end just like the HKS.
The heat shield is only a partial one and it does have a rather large opening. Then again, so does the HKS. It is completely open all the way around instead of sealed to the cold air duct like the OEM box.
However, it produces the same net power increase as the HKS - which is to say none.

More quality for what? A machined aluminum box that is embroidered with its own damning condemnation "SUCTION".
Isn't suction the very thing you are trying to eliminate?

Still bloody expensive though in any currency.
One could hope that 1000 AUD does not = $US 1000. If just for the date I am ordering parts then it might be ok :D

Nice stuff nojooc.... I am sure it sounds great

Just to clarify my point of view on why I shelled out $1000 for an intake, under no circumstances was I expecting a huge hp gain, I was after the sound.

I could have bought the K&N for less than half the money, but at the end of the day, I like quality and name brand, so I am prepared to pay for it.

It's the same as why some people wear $150 suits, whereas I love Hugo Boss.
Some like $25 champagne whereas I like Cristal, you get my drift?

Mazdamaniac, you could probably put together a turbo setup for my 8 for less than $5k, but would I get it?

Probably not, I would most likely spend $10K for a Greddy setup instead....... no offence to you, but it would make me feel better, the same feeling I get when I wear D&G, Hugo Boss, etc.

Timbo, depends how you define rich and famous.

I've had at least 4 patients make headline news and not for all the right reasons anyway.

I just reckon, given the display of conspicuous consumption, you should be drumming up business... a few caps, some laminates, a bit of gold.... there's obviously buyers out here! :D

conspicuous consumption???

Timbo I'm almost at the verge of trying to lose business because I'm too busy and can't find good help. I'm even working 4.5 days a week now, totally against all my principles.

..... Hugo Boss. Really .

I don't find Hugo Boss fit me well and the fibric is a bit blend. I am more into the less obvious goodies - I recently went into a good suit shop and brought 2 suits from Louis Feraud half price, but still cost more than your intake. I found they are the only one that fits me. I probably have a narrower shoulder like the Germans :D

On that note, that is why I chose Fujitsubo exhaust and probably will go for Knight sport supercharger. I still aimed for that HKS oil cooler though. I know I am still not be able to take the "rice king" title off nojooc :D, but I think I am very close
