Hey Aussies!

I'm a fellow RX-8 owner and am coming to your area on a vacation in June. I have some questions.

How much does diesel fuel cost? Is it the same price in New Zealand? I am renting a car in Australia and then a camper in New Zealand and wondering what to expect.

There are further questions but I will refrain until later.

Don't know what price is NZ. But it is about A110cents at present..

this site will help you getting current price.

www.shell.com.au/petrolpricing

EDIT: I think you will have to hunt around for a diesel car. I wonder which car rental co. rent you a "die" "soul" car. :p

Across the ditch, you pay for stuff in New Zealand Dollars. They are different from Australian dollars. Just like US Dollars are valued differently than the Aussie.

I have a feeling it is more expensive over there. But I have been known to be wrong

ATM, Diesel is about $1.10 per Litre. Pretty close to $4 / gallon (AUD), so about $3 US a gallon. Really rough figures though.

Cheers,
Hymee.

I got the flight and car booked or reserved. Thanks for the info on fuel. The Australian rental is a gas engine and the New Zealand vehicle is diesel. I DID find that it is about $3.67 a gallon with the link supplied.

We are hoping for a late winter in June for New Zealand. We're going to visit Cairns, Sydney, Melbourne and Ayres Rock - 2 to 3 days in each city poking around. Then on to New Zealand. Not much time in each place but a month time in travel. We are really loooking forward to it. I appreciate your input.

I hope you are flying between these Australian places. Melbourne to Sydney is a day of hard driving, and Sydney to Cairns is maybe a three day journey. By car to to the Rock? Unless you are familiar with outback driving, forget it. You will undoubtably hit something ranging in size from a cockatoo, to a wombat, all the way up to the most probable piece of roadkill - the kangaroo. Then you will decide to walk for help, and in the process either (a) die of thirst, or (b) get eaten by a poisonous snake.

Fly to Adelaide and catch the Ghan (a train) and experience the beauty of the Australia outback on the way up.

Hi,

Since you are not coming until next year fuel prices will have changed a bit, hopefully down, petrol and diesel are a little more expensive in NZ. I'm an NZ based Aussie.

About 10% higher in real terms in NZ.

I've also travelled most of Aus and the distances are pretty vast. Alice Springs (Nearest large town) to the rock and back is 1000km return. Plan well or you will spend your whole time driving. Also around NZ it takes a whole lot longer to travel the same distance. At least 50% more if not double because of the towns and lack of freeways.

Cheers

Mike
