I just completed quite a long run and ran my fuel down to the lowest level so far -- warning light on for the last 80ks.

I filled the tank with 56.5 litres (of Optimax!). The handbook says the tank capacity is 61 litres, so I had used 93% of stated capacity. Am not sure I have ever gone that close without the car starting to splutter (or running out, back in student days )

My rule of thumb in the past is that with sensible driving you can usually get 100k (highway) or 75k (urban) once the fuel warning light has come on, but I would suggest that is probably 75k and 50k respectively for the Rx-8.

Overall consumption, after 5,800k, remains steady at 12.3 L/100k (that's 22.3 m per imperial gal)

My fuel light kicks in with 11 litres to go... so at 12.5l/100km thats about 88kms to absolutely empty.... so I'm actually amazed that you got 80kms and still had 4.5 litres left.

 

I too have been pushing the boundary. I always like to think 100km "on the warning", but have yet to achieve it with the '8, nor been prepared to run out of juice trying (yet).

I have got over 500 km out of my last tank, but I didn't put a full tank in at the end of that because of some "spirited" driving coming up this weekend and wanted to save a little weight. But with carefull record keeping, I should be able to reconcile back. This weekend will surely blow the consumption

So far, the most I have been able to shove in the tank has been 58.7 L. Cutting it fine! I don't think 100km is achievable, but still optimistic

So far getting 12 - 13's average on a tank, generally driving from home to work and back.

hey guys, welcome to the virtues of the rotary engine.

Spare a thought for the lucky few down under that own the twin-turbo triple rotor (20B) Cosmo. With an extra rotor & turbo's to feed, you can imagine they aren't really known for their economy. Try a best of 7km/Litre cruising dropping to around 5km/Litre for around town.

Personally, I think the RX-8 gives excellent fuel consumption for its performance, character & style. Mind you, if it gave the same fuel consumption my JC Cosmo did, Id expect the 20B performance along with it...

 

I must clain total ignorance of the 20B Cosmo. That was a real surprise to me - I never knew it had a triple rotor with twin turbos.

You'd need to own your own oil company!

I'm more than happy to weigh up the advantages of the rotary engines, allowing the RX8 to achieve the 50-50 weight distrib, and all it's other good points, against a healthy appetite for fuel. At least it is making it into horsepower. I used to have a Astina SP ('92) and it was probably getting around 8 or 9's. But t was only 92 kW.

But I have been used to a 5.7L up until the '8. It was actually very good considering the capacity, and the lug of a car it pulled around. Mind you we were achieving high levels of performance. Mine was 235 kW at the wheels (up from about 180 standard), and still excellent economy. Mine was returning around 12 - 13 on average. All this with very simple, in expensive mods. Would like to wait and see what can be achieved with the 8's.

PS - I saw a tripple turbo 20B on and engine dyno recently.
I can't remember exactly, but it was up around 1000 kW mark

Its a pity your in Brisbane. Am taking my Cosmo to that RX-8 meet on Sunday at palm beach.

Cosmo needs a run as the Rx-7 has been getting all the (fun) action lately.

Its all about value for money. At this level of motoring, one shouldn't ask for exceptional fuel economy. I don't think that any RX-8 owner will scoff at its consumption & re-sell the car based on that.

The fact that you have been able to get almost 59lt into a 61lt tank is quite amazing. Was the car spluttering into the Servo.........???

No, I wasn't spluttering into the servo! But who knows how much further till it happened. My motto is you never know unless you run out once!

I am real happy "putting up with" the economy, for want of a better term. It is the whole package one has to consider - slower down the strip, faster through the twisties
