Go forward on this James.

The only way I found out was through the RX-8 threads, and Mazda either chose not to advise me or didn't check their computer database regarding the recall.

Lucky I got it done on warranty before it ran out!

It's not a recall, it's just a popular warranty issue. Nor is it a safety issue so Mazda has no statutory obligation to offer a recall on engine mounts. Sorry to have to correct you on this but a recall and a replacement under warranty are two different things!

Have to check the mounts on my RX-8 now.

Its an 03 model so could be suspect.

Even if it is not a recall they should have advised owners that there may have been a problem, COS THEY KNEW ABOUT IT. It seems to the average person that they may have tried not to make it public as it would cost them a significant amount of money. To only replce the ones that were brought up with owners local dealers would have beed acceptable. The may not have a statutory obligation to replace them on all cars, but they have a moral obligation to let owners know that a product they have sold to them may have an issue.

But then, no company is moral ... neither is law moral in the context that you're talking. If I were you I'd take the very kind offer that was given to you in the first place before it expires!

Mazda needs to be accountable for a lot of B/S with the RX8 including the initiall and still unresolved cars power , good on you for going for them on the engine mounts .

The mazdaphiles wont hear of Mazda doing anything wrong especially with their pride and joy the RX8

I gotta disagree Cromax, its got to start somewhere. Mazda Australia make enough money of each new sale that they should have plenty in the coffers to cover this sort of thing. Faulty product is faulty product. If it wasnt faulty they wouldnt have changed it.

I would love to be of the same opinion, but my differing opinion is due to the fact that I see warranty and insurance contracts in black and white. Maybe what Mazda should do is extend their warranties on engine and drivetrain (which is something they do offer) from new ... as 3 years is a bit pompous and big headed. But then, a contract is a contract. We all agreed to a 3 year warranty when we bought our vehicles, therefore that's what we get unless we extend it, which is something that is offered by Mazda, but Mazda Australia doesn't take the financial risk, it's underwritten by someone else.

I'm very tempted to pay the $1395 to get covered.

AUSTRALIAN RX8 OWNERS ONLY PLEASE

This is really important that i get this evidence. I will update you all on what is happening shortly.

cheers guys

James
After noticing some vibration on my July '03 car, I asked my Mazda dealer to check. They advised the engine mounts had "sagged" and recommended replacement. They petitioned Mazda Australia for consideration, since although my car was 10 months out of warranty, I have an immaculate service record. I ended up paying $167 instead of $1300 for the repairs and modification. I feel that was a very satisfactory outcome.

In all my dealings with my Mazda dealer and Mazda Australia, I have approached them reasonably, and been treated in a reasonable matter. You won't hear any complaints from me. I am generally very satisfied with the performance and reliability of my RX-8.

I hope that in fairness, my reply is included in your report to consumer affairs.

Labrat, thanks for your input. My reason for getting this information and going about it this way is because my nice, friendly approach was not accepted by Mazda. The car has always been serviced at Mazda dealers and had regular services but the reason Mazda said they wouldnt help was not satisfactory to a long time customer. The RX8 isnt the only Mazda ive had and basically they told me that it comes down to numbers and history with Mazda and not the actual issue. Im trying to make a point of shotty parts and 'unfair' service. Its not just for me as i know there are other people getting the same treatment due to the fact they are complaicent and dont ask too many questions of Mazda. Someone needs to push the fact with Mazda so every customer gets a fair go.

July 2003 build - engine mounts replaced under warranty at 29,000km in May 2006 due to excessive engine vibration.

mate, at the moment i am just collating examples. I am not using any names, plates or other information as i dont want anyone else to be inplicated with Mazda. It seems that if you stand up and say something they make sure they remember you in the future

Cromax is right here mate, it is only a Recall if it is a safety problem, not all RX-8 owners have had issues with mounts (although most probably have or will in time), and there is the issue, Mazda can claim it is "wear and tear".
Of course Japan is aware of it, by now the new mount being replaced would have had some modification done to them in material compound's to help prevent the issue.
A Mazda parts guy will tell you if there has been any change, usually Mazda adds a single "Alfa" letter on the end of the part number, they can go from say original part number is blank, to a A,C, or even E on the end, this will tell you that Mazda have changed the part in some way, some early 8 owners more than likely had the same original "defective" mount replaced a few years back.

Talk to a dealer parts guy, he can tell you exactly when or if the part was a modified one in vehicle production by your cars chassis number...thats the JMOFE1031.........

BTW Mazda (Australia's) tactic here is very typical and from what I have read most owners have had mounts replaced during scheduled servicing, and are told at vehicle pick up. Or if you complain of vibrations.
If you are out of Warranty, I am surprised Mazda does not have an extended warranty period/policy.
If they don't Mazda Australia does through their Dealers have a "goodwill" out of warranty policy.
Your dealers SM can inquire on your behalf, but again this can depend on your "attitude" and if he is prepared to offer assistance, it can also be Mazda pays for the part you pay for Dealer labour.

Looking at the part numbers, there have been three different engine mounts fitted to Oz RX-8's since it was released here. The original mount never made it into our cars.

The first revised mount was supplied to cars built in May '03, the second revision was fitted to cars built from Nov '04.

The third (and latest revised mount) has a new heatshield fitted...it made the production line in August '05.

If it is in it's 3rd line of production and Original Parts Replacement then I expect and are confident that Mazda have fixed this issue, it is not the first time Mazda have used oil filled engine dampers in Rotaries, the first was in the FB RX-7,
for memory the part number was FB01-39-040A...stand corrected.
Oil/fluid filled mounts were also used in Transmission/ Extension Housing, and rear suspension mounts.

I noticed a slight vibration at traffic lights which must mean the mounts are suspect...............

Have been told by DAZ-13B that I can try to get a "Good will" warranty service job at the local dealer. Will give that a try & report back.

Mazda retail an "updated" version engine mount for $187 according to John Newell delearship.

My price via my Mazda mate is $136 each. Before I purchase & go for the "Good will" fitment.

Does anyone know of any "Mazdaspeed" or RE-Amemiya / FEED / Knightsports engine mounts first.....????

None on the market.

About 6 months ago, FEED was developing some weird header that need a change of the engine mount, which is proposed to be of a different shape, make way for the odd design.

But no word since then.. prob not doing the promised gain and tune over the 10000rpm mark. haha.

Mazsport in the US has aftermarket engine mounts , they free up extra room allowing for bigger turbo to be placed if required .
