Engine Flooded!
Grrrrrr, just when i went out to put the new rims on, my car wouldnt start and i realised that when i moved the car yesterday, it was only on for a few seconds.
car just cranks over and over without firing up.
read around and the deflood procedure consists of just cranking it for 10 seconds with the accelerator pedal pushed down and then letting it wait for 20 seconds then keep trying
there were a few times when it almost cranked over but it never did.
getting dark now so ill try it again tomorrow.
also read that theres a deflood procedure where you open the maintenance ports and inject a little bit of washer fluid in and it basically washes the fuel away and you can go again.

anybody had any similar experiences?

Got a hill and some friends nearby?
I have heard a push start it is a pretty good way to get it going if it is flooded.
Other than that they say to pull the plugs and clean them and or pull the fuel pump fuse and crank the hell out of it if the battery is good.

Hook up a tow rope and pull start in second gear for about 200 meters. (ign on, 2nd gear, release clutch at about 20kph). works for me every time. I don't even waste my time wearing out the starter.

You too hey!!! However I didn't have the "Roll it down a hill" manual box option
Wife just moved the RX on SUN leaving the engine on for a few seconds.......... BIG MISTAKE
Guess who got the frustrating call on MON morning & ended up coming home from work when she didn't know what a "Circuit relay" looked like to pull out.
Turns out the removal of the Circuit relay wasn't enough & the exceptionally flooded engine (yes, she kept using accellerator whilst cranking) required the removal of the leading plugs & much engine cranking to expell all the built up fuel.
Note: Remove Circuit + EGI relay to prevent fuel + spark whilst cranking
Note: Plugs appear in good condition after 10,000km
Note: Rotors heavily carboned after looking into the open spark plug holes.
Once the fuel was expelled, the plugs where re-fitted & the engine started straight away. Took it out onto the M7 for a thrashing to clear the fuel issue plus a minor carbon clean.
Chastised wife for me losing 3-hours to fix this. She has been driving rotary powered cars for 10 years & should have known better than to turn off the engine after 60 seconds on SUN afternoon.

Can you give me more info dmrh?
Steps on how to get it running would be greatly appreciated and would prevent a costly and time consuming tow to the dealer!

Well! After tossing and turning all night about it, i woke up early and after scouring the forum for a good hour, i found the mazda TSB on flooding followed the steps (minus removal of plugs) and after cranking it over for 20 mins, the engine spluttered to life! the smoke that came out of the exhaust was amazing but after a bit of a drive it disappeared. car still feels a bit sluggish to drive, but im sure thats the carbon on the rotors which should work itself out after an engine clean at 10k. PHEW!

FYI.............Always start the engine with ZERO-throttle
De-flooding made simple.....
1st stage..... Depress throttle to 100%. This turns off fuel pump via TPS signal to the ECU. Try cranking it at 100% throttle. Do not release throttle whilst cranking unless it starts
2nd stage.... Locate "CIRCUIT" relay * in main relay/fuse box behind left head light. Its clearly marked on the underside of the lid. Remove relay. Using Zero-throttle, crank the engine again until it tries to start.
If you have a friend. Get them to have relay ready whilst you crank. If the engine fires, have them plug the relay back in before the residual line fuel pressure drops too much.
If you are alone, then let it run until it dies again naturally. Re-fit relay & try cranking again with ZERO-throttle
3rd stage....... Some cars are flooded pretty hard-core & require the plugs to be removed & cleaned. Whilst out, you need to expell the built up fuel to bring the air/fuel ratio down to a level that will combust
4th stage...... Locate & remove "EGI" relay* in the main relay/fuse box behind left head light. Now therre is no fuel & spark, you can crank the engine & spray all the fuel out. The heavy misty fuel mix will dissapate the more you crank.
5th stage...... Once the fuel mist getting expelled is under 10% of what was originally expelled, re-fit plugs, relays & start the engine. if the engine fails, take plugs back out & repeat process.
* Circuit relay is a Mazda definition for the power to the main fuel pump relay
* EGI relay powers the ECU. No power = no spark
Note: Fuel pump relay is alongside the Circuit relay. A Mazda fuel pump relay controls the fuel pump speed by engaging a resistor in series with the pump power.

Taka,
I suggest Dave's excellent flooding DIY post be added to the '10 Things' sticky for future reference. Perhaps even copied into the first post in that thread?
