ECU for the Renesis

A little birdy told me that a Renesis with an ECU that is currently under development put out 248 horsepower at the flywheel on the dyno. I think that is about 190 kw.

Is 190kw at the flywheel good? What does the standard Renesis put out?

Being clueless as far as engine mods and power go, my response was "Wow!"

The little birdy also told me that the development of this ECU is well advanced and will hit the market at under $2K.

The little birdy is a systems engineer with the developer and he said that he doesn't believe turbo and FI are the way to go because Mazda designed the Renesis to be naturally aspirated. Once again, not knowing a thing about it, my response was "Really?"

I can't reveal the identity and location of the little birdy, because if I did, I would have to shoot you.

The best tuner in Japan can tune it with intake and exhaust with an ECU with that figure.

The absolute figure is meaningless... tell us the gain.

standard 6sp = 177kw @ fly

12kw @ fly increase sounds about right for a simple ECU re-flash (NA mod)

The problem is the car is not 177kW at the fly stock.

In Japan, even their car ranges from 180hp to 220hp, not 250hp.

Most tuner can get 250hp back with some mods and replace the ECU with theirs!

Jormatom, Is this ecu tune developed for our OZ rx8 ? Ie is it a local development. You at least can tell us that much without giving away any secrets.

IIR, Hymee's first effort with Phil was on ECU tuning, and the conclusion was that there was not all that much to gain, based on the stock ECU's map.

Another power rumour.

No reason to disbelieve your source Greg but there's so many unsubstantiated rumours about varying power gains from various mods that it is getting hard to know what to believe anymore.

I understand your sceptisism Dave. I just posted the info to see what you guys knew about it.

The system engineer is the son of a very good friend of mine. He has been with this company for 5 months now and saw this thing on the Dyno himself. I've got no reason to believe he was pulling my chain.

But you never know, he might actually be a chain puller. Not being up to speed with mods and the workings of the Renesis, I didn't have any questions to fire back at him.

He was worried about telling me before the product was actually released, so I am keeping it hush hush. I'll let you know who the company is on Saturday and not on a public forum.

Cheers

greg

Spending a bazillion (over a grand, I assume) for a lousy 13kw (if verified) is a waste of money and effort.

Still, plenty of moonunits spend $500 on an intake to gain 1-2kw (maybe), so who am I to criticise??!!

Good luck to the guy.

Oh, and 248hp is 185Kw....

That makes it an 8Kw gain over advertised power....not 13.

Fair enough Greg. There's no doubt quite a few people out there working away on this engine atm.

I'm still of the view that we're yet to see a good value power mod in this country but value is a subjective concept I guess.
