CalID read from scan tool
#26
I tested the CAN tool on a European SP (mine!) and it worked fine. The functionnalities were beyond my expectencies for a prototype software! Well done Hymee and SCO.
I'm meeting some other EU owners next Sunday. Will test my unit on HPs.

That is a good question. Here is what I replied on another thread...

Our diagnostic interface will present itself as a male DB9 connector. To connect to a laptop with a serial "COM" port, you need a "crossed" DB9-DB9 (female-female) cable. These are often called "data transfer" or "null modem" cables. I have an off-the shelf "Belkin" brand part of which I can supply the part number.
For a laptop without a serial port, you need a USB - Serial adaptor. I have tested a number of units. Not all work. I have found a unit supplied by an international company that I recommend as "Hymee Approved", and one of these is already out in the field. You need to same serial cable as mentioned above.
For a PocketPC / XDA, since our unit presents itself as a standard DB9 serial connector, you need an appropriate serial cable for the unit you have. These are very model specific. These units normally present as a female DB9 connector, ready to plug straight into the back of a PC's COM port. I need to check specifically, but I am tending to think that since the serial cable to the PPC is already "crossed", then the cable will be able to plug straight into the PPC. But I need to check. Otherwise a null-modem will need to be employed.
Due to the far range of options, we will not be supplying a serial cable to go between our interface and the computer. We will however publish recommended part numbers. What we will provide will include the interface unit, and the correct cable meeting to plug into the vehicles ODBII port.
I hope that adequatley answers your questions.
Cheers,
Hymee.
BTW - It also works on a Mazda 6. It should work on a Mazda 3 as well, and any other vehicle with a CAN-bus conforming to the ISO spec.

I will continue not to prove read my sentence before pushing the button. At least you can guess what I typed. Lucky I have a typist at work and spell the words for me.
Hey, you mention about the serial-USB adaptor for the scanner. My laptop and Palm (if you have this version in your development schedule), uses USB. How do I know which one you are talking about that works with the adaptor, the Hymee approved one? Compaq? Since they are sold to HP now. :p
Come to worse I have to spend a bit of money to get the Serial PCMA card, right? how much are they, roughly?
I just can't wait ....

No, it is not cable specific. It presents as a standard DB9 male connector that is RS232 (COM / serial) compliant.
The PDA/XDA's Palms etc are cable specific. But if they have the option to plug into a serial /DB9/RS232 then there is a manufacturer specific cable available from the manufacturer, and possible other 3rd party vendors.
The reason I specify a certain USB / Serial adaptor is that cheap ones don't work properly. I have found one that does work properly, and is not much dearer than a cheap one.
Cheers,
Hymee.

Damn,
This RX-8 owning business is going to get expensive.....when I eventually get one (early 2005 now looks likely)
Little matter of new RX-8 Luxury Pack + extras
Then my insurance doubling - at least (compared to Mazda SP20)
Increased fuel consumption
Hymee Grill (Sorry Hymee exhaust will have to wait)
And now I'll need to get a PPC to collect all my data.......
Anyway looks very good so far. As a local I'll be happy to test once I've got the appropriate accessories (including RX-8).

XDAI Serial cable
Thanks Hymee,
Yep the serial sync cable for the XDAII should do the trick and is available online at:
myxda.com/web/template/ShopItemDetail.vm?shop_item_name=XIISerialCable
Yes it does present as Female DB9 connector, and almost definitely would be already "crossed".
So I will be looking forward to the release of the unit and software, and the final cost.
Cheers,
Tony

Kiwi, thanks for the Dell information. Looks like a good value deal and I've placed an order -- regret that the Dell pda doesn't have a serial port so the serial-USB adaptor that Hymee was talking about will be necessary to use his scan tool.
There's nothing like a challenge, or two!!

The USB to serial adapter Hymee has previously mentioned will not work with the Dell Axim X30. There are converters available from the looks of it such as the one here: http://www.yourmobiledesk.com/produc...fm?prodID=4973
Alternatively you could use a serial to bluetooth adapter but these are even more expensive (around US$169).
The project is far from dead... there is some really cool stuff coming together at the moment, hopefully some pics soon.
