I just installed my AFE shifter, and I love the feel...
BUT I've got a cabin noise issue. Its definitely louder... After a quick trip around the block I came back and removed the green insulation material which definitely made a difference. It was unbearable before but now its just annoying...
I'm wondering if I have this noise for 2 reasons. Does the lower boot need some sort of silicon applied to seal it to the metal... Also, I don't think I put the upper boot's plastic ring thing low enough... Any techniques for getting it to go down? I'm always hesitant to 'force' anything unless I've prior experience...

Seriously? Get some 40mm pvc pipe, about 1m long. Turn the shifter upside in to the top of the pipe and drop the whole thing onto some concrete at about 30cm, making sure everything stays vertical. do this a few time and the plastic thingy will start to slide.

He doesn't have to do this nor can he. His has the new longer white ring as you (little john) suggested. These are now epoxed to the shaft. So don't go beating on it. If you want the rubber lower on the ring get a wooden dowel and just lightly hammer it around until it gets where you want it.
I have one of these longer parts in my car since last week. My car just never had noise to start with. If anyone out there who lives close has a car with noise I sure would love to hear it.
BTW I tied putting the green fuzzy back in my car and noticed a slight but not much more noise. It seemed to get squished in between the white ring and the **** so I can see why it does transfer more noise. It also may be that the shaft must be left a nutral as possable. Still that's grasping for straws.

Oooops, don't apply murphy's law...
I have found that sometimes you can use hairspray as a lube when u need to slide rubber over a smooth surface. When it dries, it acts like a gentle adhesive.

Drive an RX-8 with one of these installed before you make up your mind, labrat. I recall you and I share similar driving philosophies......this shifter really does enhance your driving experience.

An Aussie company makes these sorts of things for Commodores. The claim it is a "straight movement" from 2nd to 3rd. I feel my AFESS works like that. Jst push it forward from 2nd, and it goes to 3rd.
Anyway, the Aussie companies product is called the RIP SHIFTER. Therefore, I think Richard Paul should call his the RAP SHIFTER :D
2nf thoughts, too easy for someone to add a C to the front
Cheers,
Hymee.

No more jokes, labrat.......or at least use a smilie. You can't expect us to pick your subtle form of humour when you crack one funny every two years! Jeezus mate, throw us a bone occasionally :D .
How's the chubby son-in-law's BMW going, BTW? I see the latest Wheels ran a comparo and the Mazda 6 beat it on all counts!

Well fitted a new gear **** over the weekend. A Razo 300g RA65.
It had three position options for fitting. At first i tried the midpoint and the cabin noise went completely crazy. The shifter has always been louder in this car than my last one. But this was much louder than the stock ****.
So tried the higher setting. Almost silent!!
Think it's because the tapper fitting sits just off the taper in the shaft, a couple of mm's.
First time in two cars that the shifter has added very very little extra noise. Will let you know how it plays out over a few weeks.
