Keeping The Lounge Under Control

As of right now the forum is great. The one area that worries me is the lounge. I am beginning to see the rumblings of what I think should not be allowed. Buy A Girl Boobs? is what I am talking about. I am not saying that things like that shouldn’t be allowed; I’m just saying it is a premonition of what is to come. The maturity of our site is evident, because a thread like this turns into an argument about the morality and rights behind the issue. I understand that the lounge is for off topic conversation. As of right now it also serves as our other car forum, since there is no general automotive section. For the most part the conversations are of some meaning and are not to extreme. I am afraid the lounge could turn into the lounge on RX-7 Club. I for one don't want threads like "Thong Thursday" in our lounge. The section there is getting a little too extreme for my liking. I think there should be a stricter limit on what gets posted. I have no problem with thread pertaining to politics, movies, music, etc., but I see no reason for threads like the above mentioned. It is up to the moderators (RX - 8, Sputnik) what can and cannot go, but I urge them to keep a lid on some of the more extreme threads. It also won't hurt to add some more mods to the lounge due to the increasing responsibility that comes with the territory. Some may not agree with me on the premise that anything short of pornography should be allowed. To those people I say they can go else ware to find the boarder line explicit material and keep the dirt off our site. I would like to see some feed back from the mods and everyone else because I may be alone in my feelings toward what should and shouldn't be on the site.

i think i can appreciate what you mean by "dirt", as in exploitation of sexuality??
i'd like to think i'm a progressively minded guy, and as such haven't any shame or guilt issues with sexuality, be they moral or whatever, and really don't have a problem with discussing it publicly... but yeah, it would bother me if some threads began to degrade into horny-teenage-drooly-dreams about stupid sexy and submissive women...

Maybe it's time to at least create a separate "non-RX8 car talk" forum.

Hey, I'm fine with that ... since I'm now a owner of a new Protege5 ...

And counting the days (for the next 4 years, more or less) until I can trade up to a RX-8.

You will NEVER see a Thong Thursday on my watch and I will step down if I get chastised for quashing rights to Free Speech. Off-topic posts like GF trouble, movies, sports, the usual, etc are welcome, as it is THE LOUNGE. Off-topic means just that. As long as the forum TOS are not violated and everyone uses common sense, we're bound to honor it whether we accept or cringe at some stuff. Under the guise of Free Speech(Not really free, as everyone is a guest here), it's inevitable that someone will want to push the envelope and see just how far they can go then howl in protest if they get moderated. I'm still undecided about sigs and avatars bordering on "questionable", but still legal. They make the forum "non-work-friendly" to view also, and Mazda reads daily for opinions and insight on customer needs and wants. Students don't have Mr. Boss or "Harrassment-Lady" looking over their shoulder, nor are they likely to buy the car soon (with the exception of Herc, of course). There is no other exclusive RX-8 forum so why not use common sense for the time being? If a housecleaning is deemed necessary then so be it. Those feeling they got burnt can cough up the cash for their own forum. I don't see that happening anytime soon, for at least a year. Feel free to comment or PM me if you differ or want to discuss more.

Thank you Toadman. That is exactly what I wanted to hear. I was fairly certain that you weren't going to let anything to extreme happen, I am just glad to get that reasurance.

I definitely think off-topic discussion should be allowed in the Lounge, I mean that is what it is there for, you know, politics, stocks, general car stuff, jokes, whatever.

BUT I definitely think that the sexually related postings, I use the term sexually related loosely, really don't have a place in the forum. I am not here to read posts about some chick who wants a bunch of lame "I can't get a girlfriend" suckers to pay for her boob job. I mean come on. I am here to read and post with other like minded individuals who all are interested in or have pre-ordered the RX-8 and may want to share their views/opinions on other topics.

i think your right about the forum being more mature convos. But i think that anything that is off-topic should be allowed...anything that doesnt break the TOS..should be aloud...IMO even if that is Thong Thursday...if you dont want to read a thread then dont click on it...its as simple as that...and if you do open it by mistake...then your not gonna be surprised by **** or the like.....but i do support the idea of a seperate forum for "other cars"...take care

Then what's this: General Automotive forum ?

one don't want threads like "Thong Thursday" in our lounge. The section there is getting a little too extreme for my liking.
That's the crux of this. Too extreme for your liking. This is a diverse website, with diverse members. If you don't like what's being posted in the Lounge, don't read it.

That said, we moderators (though I'm not a mod in the Lounge) *do* take our jobs seriously. We *do* uphold the TOS of the forum, and we *do* take care of threads/postings/members who get too much out of hand.

There's always a problem when you try to define what's appropriate and what isn't; a Supreme Court justice once said "I can't define obscenity, but I know it when I see it." I view it as a continuum of sorts -- a bell curve if you will. People at one end are offended by almost everything they see. People at the other end are offended at nothing (and they tend to offend almost everyone!). But *most* people aren't at either extreme, they fall somewhere in the middle. And that's the group we have to try to "please".

I've never understood why people get so uptight about sex, which is a good, positive, natural thing. Yet they seem to have no problems with extreme violence, which is neither good nor positive nor very natural; it's destructive and evil.

Anyway, you have the right to your opinions, and I'm sure a number of people agree with you. There are also a great number of people who don't (or who fall somewhere in between). If you see something you think is offensive, report it! The mods will either do something about it or let you know they don't see a problem with what you reported. Either way, I think the moderators of this forum (yes, even myself) are doing a fantastic job -- that goes double for the mods in the Lounge, where (almost) anything goes!

I agree we cannot let things get out of control...but at the same time certain things such as sexuality are different all over the world. You will find nudity on network television in Australia, Europe and even some Asian countrys. I don't like holding our standards to the American, British standards that are strict about adult subjects due to our Puritanical history.

But It is clear in the TOS no nudity...so no nudity...BUT what about seeing breasts? there are several pictures of males on this forum (complete tools) without their shirts on standing by their car...these pics have NOT been removed by moderators...so pictures of women standing next to their car without their tops on SHOULD be allowed. Please someone (hopefully a few moderators) can answer this.

Actually, I brought this thread back as a testament to you guys. (the Admins and Mods)

This place hasn't turned into a cesspool in the last year and a half. It's still entertaining to visit! Even though some of us push the limits.. ONCE IN A WHILE.. You guys moderate very well. Thanks for doing a good job!
