So I'm not driving the rex for the weekend as I have thanksgiving plans and the gf is around. As such I took off the cat today and took some pics and plan to keep it off until I figure out what to do with it (Gut it, racepipe, make my own... etc)

TBH I don't think it's clogged or anything... I did notice a little bit of separation between where everything bolts together. It looked like sand or grit all over it... I'll post the pics below. Let me know if the cat looks bad or whatever if I'm missing something.

All the bolts came off relatively easily and the ones at the rear had definitely been changed because they were 21in nuts... which is ******* huge.

So no problems really... Let me know what everyone thinks the next best course of action would be
Thanks.

You're right, seems clean. But there is something funny about this exhaust, the welds and fit don't look OEM... Maybe I'm crazy but can you take a pic of the whole thing?

I don't know how you would get views like that inside a stock exhaust, especially the O2 sensor. I'm thinking you might a hacked in cat that's off another car and too small. But need to see the whole thing together.

So I should put it up like it was fully together and then take a pic? Or take a pic with it removed? But the rest of the exhaust?

SOUNDS INSANELY BEASTLY ps. without any exhaust

Whatever state you have it in, just want to see the cat pipe from end to end. Or yoi can google a stock rx8 midpipe and compare.

I'll pic it and throw it up. And I'll compare myself too.

Here are some pics of the full cat and midpipe.

I was curious about the sand all along the triangle connector end (3 bolt ends)
I have this sandy residue on both sides and when I rub it, it comes right off. Should I scrape/sand it all off before I reattach it? Do I need any type of adhesive or oil?

Also a lot of the bolts are rusty, I'm going to put blue loctite on them but before hand should I just use vinegar and steel wool to clean them?

And here is a video with the midpipe off when I had to move the cart.

That's not the starter... The starter is amazing as is the battery both brand new. I'm worried it may be the alternator though because this was after two days turned off

I've never had issues starting the car especially when hot. Only when cold or it sits for periods of time. That was the first time I've ever had it not turn over.

Yeah, the starter speed is fine from the sound, but... that exhaust note is sounds to me like there is one or more missing or damaged apex seals. It is far too rythmic with different pulse notes.

And looking back at your compression test, I'd point at the front rotor:
Code:
#1 at 333 rpm - 7.2 | 6.5 | 6.5
                          ^this one

Here's the list of things replaced in the last year and a bit...

Battery (2014/04/14)

Plugs (one of three times in the past year and a half)(2014/02/04)

Fuel Injector Seals and Repair Oil Injector Pipe (2014/01/15)

Starter Motor Assembly (2013/10/31)

Coils and Wires Twice (Like a week ago, and 2013/06/20)

Fuel Pump and Lines (2013/06/15)

Spark Plugs, Rotors, Pads, Battery (AGAIN), Air Filter, Knock Sensor (2013/02/12)

At this time in the past the car had 170000 kms.

It currently has 238000.

In that time the car has consistently reported misfires on cylinder 1 and had occasional flooding.

It seems the electrical system has always been constantly being repaired.. I feel as though the techs were just missing something but I don't know what...

As before... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, damaged apex seal on the front rotor. The struggling to start is just because it's having trouble firing with the apex seal not letting 2 of the 3 chambers build compression.

Compression test fits, exhaust note fits, CEL code fits, mileage is certainly viable...

ah yea I forgot about the starter specs from the compression test. and I agree...The exhaust pulses sound very suspect

Ok. So I have an engine that I plan on getting in a few weeks as soon as some money comes through. Is there anything else I should look into getting done at the same time?

I'm getting an engine out of an r3 with 60000 on it for a little under 2000 and doing most of the swap myself. Then I can rip apart the old engine and see what was up...

I'm planning on doing a clutch and flywheel upgrade at the same time and maybe tranny... dunno yet though..

Any other ideas?

Grab the suspension from that R3 if you can, you'll like it. And seats.

The cat pipe seems ok, sorry for the goose chase.

You know, considering what was replaced to chase this issue down, the techs must have had the intake off several times. Somebody should have noticed it wasn't even attached properly.

You'd think so... it's kinda weird... I already checked and the suspension is gone. There is a fella selling bilstein struts and shocks from the r3 on here though so maybe I'll grab those and swap them in.

I'll probably do a short shifter too... but that's easy stuff... upgraded engine mounts maybe if mine aren't in great condition

We shall see... perhaps I will transfer some of this info over to a build thread... I've also been doing substantial reading on turbos and supercharging and FI and what not. I'll hopefully have money by the end of the month and I don't think that's long enough to learn enough to modify the engine for more power so I'll probably just keep it simple.. we shall see. I'll start a build thread shortly.

that exhaust does not look like a factory pipe.
I see your video it started and turned over them died out right away, then you try to start it it just appear to be flooded.
I think you might have a leaky injector somewhere.

It's flooding because an apex seal is damaged. This is the same reason it's having trouble starting, having trouble staying alive at idle, has a clear rythmic cycle of exhaust note, etc...
