Just found out my CAT is bad....

So they said they piece cost around $1400 and total to fix it cost $1800. How long do I have until my car starts to actually mess up? The car is running fine right now but I don't have $1800 to spend right now so I need to know how soon I need to get this fixed. I seen some people don't even have this in their cars so yea.

Also is there anywhere to get this piece cheaper.

Thanks guys.

check the for sale threads thoroughly, I believe there are a few guys selling their cats for a couple hundred or so.

you should probably hollow out the cat though, a clogged cat is not good for your car.

what do you mean hollow through the cat?

Im not a mechanic or anything like that lol so I don't know these terms. Also is the CAT just a pipe? because I have seen the CAT pipes for like 3 or 400. Let me know thanks.

yes it's just a pipe, with a filter inside. search the forum for similar threads. You can unbolt the Catalytic converter pipe and knock out all of the filtering elements. You WILL get a check engine light (because you are now shooting out unfiltered exhaust) but you won't **** your engine.

don't drive your car for very long if you have a bad/clogged CAT

Indeed, option #1 Supercat is very popular. If you aren't concerned with emissions (or making a lot of noise) the Racing Beat midpipe is okay too

9.273 Catalyst is bad

Is that the CAT pipe?

Want to make sure because I don't want to buy it and it does not fix it lol

I believe there was a recall on certain RX8 models on PCM units and Cat pipes. Call up Mazda and find out. My mechanic told me about it.. I called Mazda and they had me make an appointment because my car is one of them.
BTW my cat has been pretty gone for months now.

thanks ryan, I took my car to the mazda dealership and they told me my CAT is bad. I just want to make sure it's just the pipe ( i don't know much about cars ). He told me $1800 to fix which is way more than just the pipe price which i see around 3 to 400. So I need to buy a new CAT which is a pipe and have it replaced?

Im just a little dazed because they guy at the dealership had told me you can only get a CAT from the dealership. But I am seeing these all over the place.

Err... blah blah something about US federally mandated warranty on catalytic converters for 80k miles blah blah?

http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/warr95fs.txt

EDIT: $400 to install a cat? Really? If you DO qualify for the warranty, I would shove it up the dealer's *** and make them do it. THEN never go back to them ever again.

don't pay 1800. what a rip off. the super cat is a great option. if you want to keep it stock, buy one locally from someone.

Sounds like this dealer is just trying to BS you milk you for some cash. Try a different dealer and specifically mention the recall. See what they say and if you don't like what they offer I would then look for an aftermarket pipe. To fix a recall should be free.

So I guess you're either outside the US and/or have more than 80k miles on your car? ... or are just itching for an upgrade. :P

I have 79000 on my car. Is there like a warranty on the cat from the dealership or something? I took it to a mazda dealer and they told me this? Were they suppose to fix it covered under some kind of warranty? I have a separate warranty but they told me it does not cover it.

^ this. The Clean Air Act is enforced by the EPA where all catalytic converters are to be covered for 8 years or up to 80,000 miles if they should fail. Check out the link and read it thoroughly.
