UK engine wont start when warm?

Hi, I bought a second hand rx-8 2004 model a few month ago. I do love the car but I have found that my car is having a small problem starting once the engine is warm. If for any reason I stop the car once the engine is up to temp it wont start again. I try the foot to floor to clear out any gas from engine this makes no difference. It starts again after 30 sec to a min of turning over (5-10 sec at a time) and even when starting it is very reluctant. Any ideas of what it could be?

i think you should go to the dealer to do some compression check, because if you have that problem while your engine is warm, you shuold get that a big question regarding the engine...

Uh, not really.

Check your plugs+coils, had this happen to a local club member on a cruise a couple years back. New plugs+coils, it's like new again.

The same thing happens to me. Once I go take my car out, I need to wait at least 25-30 minutes before trying to start it again, or it will just try to start but nothing will happen.

Please give us your car's history (miles, maintenance, whatever).
It is a common problem in general with rotaries, especially in Europe where short trips are more frequent.
It may be related to several different things, here are the most common:
Catalyzer. When broken or clogged it may restrict flow. You would also a general loss in performance by that time but this doesn't seem to be your case.
Ignition system: it wears out pretty quick, a lot of misinformed rotary owners also don't change the spark plugs frequently. Misfires are a symptom, yours is another in some cases.
Bad engine compression: the mother of all hot starting issues! Get a compression check done, please.
Fuel pump: it may cause power losses and make the car difficult to turn on when hot.

Hope this helps.

before you waste money buying parts that you may not need, take it to someone that can do a compression test.

hard starts are generally coil problems hard starts while warm are generally compression issues.

Hi, just had this problem sorted after 6 months, £1500 and 5 visits to local mazda dealership. Hopefully this helps as I had a nightmate:

I had the following done:
compression test
replaced spark plugs
and HT leads
full diagnostic

after all of this, still had warm start problem. Dealership sent diagnostic to Mazda UK (oem). They analysed and sent back that it was a faulty starter motor. Had to get it replaced, another £450....finally sorted. Starts first time....every time. There was a fault on all starter motors from 2004+ models.

Hope this helps!!!

Sorry if I steer off-topic a little bit, but if you get a compression test done at the dealer, are they supposed to show you the readings/results?

I did talk to the dealer about compression test and they told me sorry no can do we cant do it coz we dont have tools for it. There are only 11 rx8 in iceland still on the road. i have to take my car do the uk or denmark or sweden to get the compression test done.

Yes, they should always be willing to share that info with the vehicle owner - especially if you pay for it to be done. Even if they do it at no charge the info should be given to you if you ask to see it. Plenty of threads here on what those readings consist of and what good numbers versus bad numbers look like.

If your thinking of having it tested, search and find. Then pull down the info, print, and bring with you to the dealer. That way you can discuss with dealer immediately post testing.

Couple of other options then. First is to search this forum, a number of good threads on doing basic compression checks without a rotary compression test rig. Second, blow some significant cash and buy a rig. Maybe you can find a few others to split cost with you or you can be the only person in Iceland with the equipment and can help others out with a compression test for fee to help recoup your investment.

Hi Jim,

I just bought a 2006 RX8 last week and discovered I had this problem the first night I brought it home. The dealer took it straight back and had his mechanic look at it who couldn't fix it. Its now booked in for a compresion test next week with Mazda. I'm just wondering if I get mine sorted and it starts again when warm is it a long term fix or will I be faced with similar problems in the near future?

Thanks,

Tash

Hi all,

I have a 2004 04 plate RX8 with really bad starting WHEN HOT issues and have been advised that it is a compression problem but really dont want to fork out for a new motor it has 82000 miles on it, serviced regular, i have replaced the coils, plugs, maf sensor and the air pump as it was making a really loud noise on cold start ups, could the air pump been broken for some time eventually worn my cat out?? and would a knackered cat affect hot starting?? i have not yet done a compression test as dont have a tester for rotarys and dont really want to pay dealer prices any help/info would be great.

Thanks in advance guys.

get the high speed starter motor , make sure your battery and ignition are 100% .
Unless your compression is really bad - that list will give you the best chance of keeping it running for many more miles .

I have the upgraded starter fitted and got a larger higher power battery just last year, coild and plugs all replace within last few months so only thing left is a compression test at the dealers i think

how fast is it turning over ? Faster than the "good" starter motor in this thread ?
