To be honest a production Rotary, are the closest thing to a Race engine, unlike a standard piston to it's race piston engin version e. In the Homestead track they are noxiously LOUD & you can pretty much tell a rotary engine from a piston race engine!
So, I'm sure the Rx-8 will be quiet, but as longer you don't add performance bolt on like an exhaust system & bigger cats. The old peripherical rotary engine likes to 'SUCK GAS & HAULS ASS'... they breath as much as they can ****.
And, btw REAL Sports are supposed to make some metallic crispy or deep noise.
Mazda TV commercial (still seen occasionally on TVLAND):
"... and the Mazda engine goes hmmmmmmmmmmmm." :D

sorry rain, but we've not heard word of Db levels in the interior, other than holistic reports of autojournalists saying that the engine's volume inside the cabin doesn't get louder as the pitch raises (while you're accelerating).
i don't know if it will be as quiet as the Camry, but it won't be noisy like a cheesmo-econo-box like my Echo.
For about 30k the 8 better be quiet. Of course its going to be quiet inside. But anyways most people will be having some sort of music playing in the car. So it won't matter if it is super quiet or as quiet as the camry. By the way the camry is very quiet. My mom has one also

I guess you guys haven't read the lastest C&D. Here are the interior db ratings at idle, full throttle, 70mph crusing respectively.
SVT Cobra:50,82,72
G35:43,77,71
RX8:46,79,73
Hard to believe but thats pretty impressive. I drive a 90RX7NA and I can't imagine that being as quiet as any late model car.
One of the Japan videos said the interior of the car to be pretty quiet. The video is also of one the head designer dudes driving the car, shot from inside the car at driving speed... Let me see if I can find that link...
you mean the buzzing sound?? that's a warning beep which has been in many an RX-7, and possibly started in earlier RX models... it's to warn you to shift gears as the redline (more importantly, the rev limit) is fast approaching.
if you mean "whizzing" sound, the wankel type has a very distinct pitch, which is quite high and flat, but muffled well by the RX-8 exhaust system.
edit: thanks lensman :p... god almighty, you make one little error and... *rolleyes*
Well, a stock FD is pretty quiet, so I'd guess the RX-8 will also be pretty quiet stock.
When you put the open exhaust on it, that will be a different story though. There are some advantages to having a loud car - one time I was at a stoplight in my FD and the lane I was in ended right after the intersection. So when the light turned green I slammed on the gas to get ahead of the car next to me, and the jaywalkers that were in the middle of the street got of my way REAL quick. :p
i loooooove the almost farrari like whine of the renesis when it revs high. As for the cabin noise levels, who cares. This is a sports car pure and simple. When people bitch about noise in a miata, corvette, mustang it pisses me off. If you want a 30k quiet car, go get a bmw. The whole point of a sportscar is to hear the tiger perr and feel the bumps in the road.
Obviously the ride quality and noise can't be ear shatteringly loud or violent, but lets stay in perspective here

another reason i'd say it's going to be a pretty quiet, sedated ride when you want it to be.
... i think they're trying to make the RX-8 BMWesque at least on some levels...
